30-40 shows in the UK alone each year - wow. I've only attended Euro Militaire once (back in 2009) and it was the thrill of a lifetime to compete and judge at such an internationally renowned event and to meet so many of my mates from Planet Figure all at one show. It made me green with envy...

Del, the distance between Perth and Canberra is approximately the same as the distance between London and Moscow. For me to drive to Canberra it would take me four days of constant driving with only small stops to refuel and sleep. It would cost several hundred dollars just in fuel alone. You...

Hi Chris, As you know, Perth is one of the most isolated cities in the world. I would have to drive for two days to reach the next nearest State Capital city. The number of figure modellers here is very small, possibly only a dozen. We did have a Figure Modelling Club here for many years but...

WIP Critique Po' whiri Maori Warrior, 1/10th scale bust, DG Artworks

Hi Borek, thanks very much for your comments. Hi Tony, thanks. This was a bust I really enjoyed painting and its great to get such positive feedback. Kia ora Mike, I certainly enjoy doing my research when working on a project like this, especially when the symbols used in the ta moko have...

Cheers Chris, I loved painting this bust and had a wonderful time painting Ta Moko again. It was certainly a challenge.

Thanks Mike and Gells, I'm happy to say that my Maori is now finished. Thanks to Mike Butler for continually encouraging and me and for providing his guidance on historical accuracy. When I started out on this bust several weeks ago, I had an image in my mind of what I wanted this bust to...

Struth Nap, that's some mighty fine working you're doing there. How did you do the scrimshaw? Did you actually carve it?

WIP Critique Po' whiri Maori Warrior, 1/10th scale bust, DG Artworks

Hi guys, Another weekend over and back to the grind this morning. The Maori bust is almost complete. Just adding the final pieces. The greenstone ear piece is just undercoated at this stage. I've decided to leave off the flax shoulder covering, which is a type of rain cape, known as a...

WIP Critique Po' whiri Maori Warrior, 1/10th scale bust, DG Artworks

No pressure then...sheesh  As if painting moko wasn't difficult enough. Thanks Keith, first steps taken last night. Knowing the spiritual significance of Ta Moko I did everything I could to appease the painting gods. I cleaned my workbench, broke out some new brushes, poured...

Thanks Mike, The video of Tama Iti is a great example of why I'm fascinated by, and have such respect for, Maori culture. I understand the sacred and spiritual importance of Ta moko, and I'll be doing my very best to honour it. I start work on the Ta moko later tonight.

Well done Bob. That's perseverance for you. Glad you finally finished it. It might have taken a long time, but the finished result is definitely worth it.

Thanks Mike, I tried to fix up the left eye which was, as you rightly pointed out, not quite round. The next step is to apply the oil washes over the skin. As always, I make a dilute mix of oil paint mixed with Artists White Spirits. I start by applying to oil washes over the shadow areas...

WIP Private Perry - Chillianwallah - Update 4

I didn't realise that you weathered as you painted Brian. That's a very different technique to the way most modellers operate. Love the effects on the shako and looking forward to seeing the next steps.
