The tunic underneath is the Royal Marines ceremonial ( you can see by the collar) now only worn by the band. Many think it is a band tunic but still retains the status, it was not issued after the outbreak of WWII . The GD Royal Marines detachment wore it on the Yacht until it was decommissioned

Very interesting. The Guards were still wearing Slade-Wallace webbing in 1935, and the Marines had red collars on their tunics with officers wearing tunics buttoned to the neck rather than an open tunic with tie. Of course the facing colour should be worn on collar and cuffs, but the RM band now only wear red on the collars not cuffs and the officers and ORs now wear 'blues' without facing colour......

But our facing colour is not Red, it is Blue as in all Royal Regts. The other thing to bear in mind is that when the RM Light Infantry, and the R M Artillery were merged to form the Royal Marines once again, we had been split in early Victorian days, the tunic was then redesigned as a mix of both. The RMLI had worn a Scarlet Tunic with slashed cuffs and blue collar and cuffs piped white, similar to the Guards. The RMA, had worn a blue uniform with yellow frogging and broad red stripe on the trousers, and this was similar to the dress of the RA. The present day Drum Major RMs wears the old RMA tunic, but with the slashed cuffs of the old RMLI. The tunic of the ORs is a mix of RMA blue, but with embellishments of the old RMLI. The Buglers wear the thin striped trousers of the RMLI, yet the Musicians wear the Broad stripe of the RMA. RM dress since their formation in 1664 is very complex, but the above is a simplification on how the modern day ceremonial dress came about.

The rule for facing colours is that they go on collar and cuffs. As you state the RMLI wore a scarlet tunic with blue as the facing colour. The facing colour is usually the opposite of the tunic colour. Blue is the facing colour in those royal regiments wearing scarlet tunics, and red in those regiments wearing blue tunics. The RA and the Blues and Royals are royal regiments and correctly have scarlet collars and cuffs.

Admiral The Earl St Vincent put us forward for reccomendation to be granted the title Royal in 1802 the year it was given to us. We were always taught as recruits, that in 1802 The Corps was made Blue , we then changed to Blue Facings, the colour of Royal Regts in the Infantry. I can't speak for the Cavalry, as I don't know. I am a Kentishman, and we had 2 County Regts. The 3rd foot, The Buffs, had Buff Facings, but changed to Blue Facings collar and Cuffs when granted Royal title. They became , The Royal East Kent Regt,( The Buffs). The 50 th Foot , The West Kent Regt , had Black Facings, again changed to Blue when they became, the Royal West Kent Regt, 50 th Foot. My maternal grandfather was a Sgt in the RWKs. A lot of Londoners served in this Regt, as years ago before Boundary changes Kent went right up to the River Thames, as did Surrey. Another mark of a Royal Regt is the wearing of a Crown with Lion above it wearing a small crown, the RMs have this in their Cap Badge, but there could be some that although being Royal did not always wear it.

Not always adhered to though.

The "Royal" Norfolk Regt retained their Britannia cap badge (No crown), after the award of the Royal title in 1935.

To this day the Royal Anglians have no crown atop their badge.

There are other Royal regiments though, such as the Royal Horse Guards and the Royal Regiment of Artillery, who wear/wore dark blue tunics with red facings in the reverse of the traditional royal regt facings.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are a Royal Regiment but since the amalgamation of the Greys and Caribineers now wear yellow facings

Yes thank you all for that info, it is a minefield, and I know that there are these exceptions, but as I said Blue has been our facing colour since 1802 , when we were granted Royal, never Red. A very interesting subject though all the same.
