I've been picking away at Mitches Military Models 200mm full figure Colonel Douglas of the 11th Hussars for the past few weeks. So far I have a number of uncompleted parts.

All parts were carefully prepared and tested for fit which I might add was very good. Some parts were gued together with epoxy resin and filled with white Milliput. They were then washed in detergent and left to dry overnight.

Next I airbrushed Alclad white micro filler primer over the parts. Any imperfections were corrected and resprayed until a perfect smooth finish was achieved.

Next I airbrushed the base colours with Tamiya acrylics which were applied in thin coats.

Next the painting starts.

Starting with the pelisse.

I used a Prussian blue oil thinned with Titanium white and shadows with lamp black. Liquin medium was used to speed up the drying time. The colours were blended carefully so as not to offer too much contrast. After 48 hours the pelisse was touched up increasing or decreasing highlights/shadows as necessary. After another three days I applied a flat Alclad laquer to remove the shine and protect the paint.

I then roughed out the ermine fur with a dark grey Tamiya acrylic. Next I picked out the gold lace with a dark acrylic gold. All golds from Citadel. Next I picked out highlights and increased shadows with lighter golds and acrylic dark brown washes which is where I am now. The front is nearly done more minus picking out the weave and making the buttons stand out.

Ermine fur next almost entirely in acrylics.

The right arm!

Painted in the same was as the pelisse. I'm going to add it to the body after the lace has been finished. Too fiddly otherwise. Busby bag is painted scarlet and the lace has to have the weave added.

If anybody knows what to do with the chin straps for this model please let me know.

With the torso. The dollman has been painted Prussian blue as before and I've started to add the first coat of gold. I have about a third of a leg to paint. Again oils, this time a rich crimson shadowed with burnt umber and highlighted with titanium white. Liquin used as the medium again.

I have to make another pass with the oils to make the shadows more subtle and then Matt laquer.

I normally paint the hands and face last.

pictures look good but can you repost full size for more detail , I know you can click on image but I reckon it would make the thread more viewable

Cheers

Hello

Took a while but I figured out how to post full sized pictures!

Andrew.

Hello Tom

Yes a lot of work. I normally paint in two hour sessions and the breeches have taken four of those including tonight. They will probably need another hour at least to go over and correct anything before the laquer.

Try large scale aircraft modelling...it's even more work!

Not me. I don't try to build models anymore. The last time I tried to glue two pieces of polystyrene together, I almost burned down the house.

I have kept mine hidden from sight, locked away in the deep recesses of my modelling cave for fear of messing up such a wonderful figure by daring to go near with a brush and paint...this might just give me the impetus to give it a try, I like the blue tones on the Pelisse. I always struggle with Prussian blue oils doing the "glossies" on me!

This figure is a bit scary sin;t it? Too much lace and transparent colours.

I now what you mean about that Prussian blue. I made the acrylic undercoat slightly darker than I wanted the finish to be so making the shadows easier to cover. The Pelisse is slightly lighter than the dolman. You can't see the shading on the sleeve too well in the photograph but it is there. I figured this was going to be a shiny smart uniform so no need for wear and tear, hence dark rich colours with subtle shadow.

What I did have trouble with was the cherry red breeches. Again I matched the acrylic undercoat (seen on bottom of right leg) slightly darker than the required finish. I still have to go over it again in a few days to tidy up the shadows where it's gone a bit grotty.

I've had another couple of nights to work on Mr Douglas. I've finished his strides and given them a coat of matte varnish. I may decide to dull down the contrast at a later date when I do a tidy up. Not sure yet.

I then had a pick at the pelisse. I had s look at what other people were doing and tried to do something similar.

It looks a little untidy. Still more work to do.

Black ermine for the fur?

Looking good, nice work on the gold lace, not too sure about Black fur...the pictures that I have seen show various shades of brown but as usual, I stand to be corrected!

Steve

Hello Steve

That is why I asked about black fur. I know that fur does fade with age so we can't rely on museum exhibits . I'm really not sure. I may have to do a bit more research on this one. Brown would be easier!

Andrew

Is this any help?

I've seen that. Fur loses it's colour over time and I'm not sure how old that uniform is. You only have to go to the Natural History museum and look at the taxidermy which is if a similar age.

I need to see some uniform regulations. I've just found a line on Wikipedia that says the busby bag should be crimson, I thought it was scarlet.

Thanks anyway

Andrew

I delved into some heavy research and it does indeed look to be brown, but very dark almost black in colour.

As for the busby bag I think I painted it the wrong colour. It should be crimson, not scarlet so a repaint is needed.

If you guys see me do something wrong just let me know.

Thanks

Andrew
