G'day everyone, I was at Alan's place today waiting for my bike to be serviced and took a few photos of some of the Naked Army figures and two original sculpts he has been working on.

Cheers Jason

Its fantastic to finally meet someone else who's crazy enough to try and paint these monsters. They are so beautifully scuplted and so easy to paint they ust cry out for more and more.

i also have the bronzed statuette of Cpl. Bull Allen carrying the wounded GI over his shoulder at Mt Prothero, New Guinea. Its a beauty too, but far too big to paint. Except with a roller:)

Go Naked Army!
Tony

Thankyou guys for your kind comments, Garry the Passchendaele figure is a torso of naked army's Billy figure ( Australian infantryman ww1 ) the legs arms are my own sculpting, the Bren gunner is my conversion of thier Tobruk figure. The Vietnam figure is their early Vietnam figure with a small conversion of the right arm and a repossisioning of the head

G'Day Tony.
I have painted BULL as well, mate, it's worth the effort ,what a centrepiece!funny what you find out when researching , my Uncle Ron was actually 18 yards to the left of BULL when that famous photo was taken he and his best mate gave BULL covering fire with the Bren's when BULL went out twelve times to bring back 12 American soldiers under heavy fire from the Japenese on Mt Tambu.
As you say the detail on these Naked army figures is fantastic.
Cheers mate

Alan,

Wow, when you can personally relate to something like that it makes painting the figure so much more emotionally significant. I'm pretty sure my Great Uncle Tom was on the same mountain with the 2/7th.

I'll leave mine as a bronze. I want to get on and actually finish a few models. In the time it takes me to finish a naked Army figure I could have done siz or seven 54 mm figures.

I'd love it if naked Army released these figures in 120mm, or even 90mm white metal...??

It's just great to have some genuinely Australian figures to choose from, and not have to convert them to Aussies from Poms (no offence Chaps;) ) I'm sure if they were produced on a more commercial scale they would sell well internationally.

Cheers
Tony

These are beautiful figures! Forgive my ignorance, but what are Naked Army figures? Are these conversions of 1/6th scale "Dragon" type figures? Thanks in advance for getting me up to speed!

Naked Army is a range of Australian produced 310mm polyresin and white metal kits, featuring a range of Australian military subjects from WW1 through to modern operations by the ADF in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The huge size of the figure (1/6th scale) makes these extremely challenging subjects for figure painters, particular those of us who have a passion for Australian and ANZAC military history. The detail is beautiful and clean and the faces have real expression and character.

They can be ordered online from the company's website www.naked-army.com or from the Australian War Memorial website www.awm.gov.au

They are not action figures they are mainly static models, although some are cold cast in bronze for extra effect, and do not require any assembly. Construction is minimal and the casting is so crisp there is hardly any cleanup or gap filling required.

If you're looking for a BIG challenge, and you have six months to spare, (and lots of paint!!) I'd recommend you have a go at a Naked Army figure. Whether you paint it all by brush, or cheat and use an airbrush, it will challenge even the best figure painter.
These Naked Army figures aren't cheap, but the exchange rate is favourable to the USD, and you get a lot of modelling for your money.

Cheers

WOW, Fantastic work Alan, I especially like what you've done with the Bren gunner.
I first saw these figures a couple of years ago at the Military Workshop but hadn't really considered buying any at that stage, may just change my mind.

Tony,
many thanks for the info. Those are really beautiful figures for sure. I have to admit, for the size, they are a bargain. To be able to have a bronze sculpture of that quality for that price is certainly within allot of people's budgets. Being a bust man, I just had to go and say it though. These wonderful characters would make excellent busts! That might be a clever and more afordable way to get these fantastic sculps out to more folks. At any rate, great site (well designed and easily navigated) and great looking pieces! Thanks again for the link, bookmarked it for the future!

These are amazing pieces. I'm very impressed with your flesh tones and the way that you did the dirt, blood, fatigue around the eyes, (bags with black). I'd love these on my shelf. Thank you for the inspiration.

Cheers

Latest pics of RAR Digger

Hi Alan

I thought you might appreciate a few new pics of my Naked Army RAR Digger, taken at WASMEx last weekend. He won the large scale figure comp, and was awarded the People's Choice Award (which was a bit embarrassing considering what else was on the tables).

Cheers
Tony

Hi Tony.
Congrats on your win in Perth, i had a sneak preview in the last issue of modelart, very nicley done, The NA figures sure get people talking when they see them first hand don't they! Takes me about 3 to 4 weeks to complete a figure now took a bit longer when i first painted these beauties, I have four NA figures ( the 2 Vietnam figures,Tobruk and RAAF pilot in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on display so if you get a chance to have a look in Canberra let me know what you think.Phil is going to get me your phone no when next i see him if that's OK i'll give you as call.
Cheers
Alan

I like the second figure most (the one with the BREN LMG). The flesh tones are amazing! very soaked with sweat! and the uniform looks like it has been used very often (its very bleached)! great!
