Hi Dan

It's great work and I'm learning from you as it's not really my period.

Therefore my thanks go to you,

Huw:

The Great War is fascinating to me.
  • As a result of the war, five empires fell with cataclysmic consequences for their citizens and leaders.
  • Millions of peoples lives were changed forever as a direct result of the military and political upheavals.
  • Almost incredible anachronisms in terms of military technology and weapons systems occurred. In the same war - lances with machine guns, tanks, combat aircraft, & submarines!
  • In 1914 the army leaders of combatant nations in Europe employed some version of the concentrated mass infantry attack with little artillery support. By 1918, only the most callous and bloodthirsty of them would have dreamed of ordering such an attack and most employed combined arms attacks involving armor, artillery and aircraft in support of their infantry.
All the best,

Dan

Hi Dan

I've been reading some history of this period and understand your fascination. My areas of interest are the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, WW2 and medieval social history.

As a newbie to this era I've read the works of Hastings, Barbara Tuchman and am about to read the Allan Mallinson book. I'm fascinated by the battles of August 1914 and the Napoleonic formations used against modern weapons - frightening and insane at the same time and I think your points sum up the war very well.

Cheers

Huw
