The Revolutionary War is one of my favorite periods and I'd like to paint more from this period in addition to sculpting them. Some of you have seen pics of this figure. It was produced by Fort Duquesne (fantastic casting) and sculpted by Pete Culos. I only have the coat basecoated and the face is almost done. I would like to finish him while sculpting my German or maybe after. I saw him sitting on one of my shelves and thought he really needs to be finished, anyway, yes I do sometimes paint, though rarely.~Gary

I really liked painting the buff portions of the uniform. If I were to do it again, it would be a bit more dull. I almost forgot, the figure is painted in oils with an acrylic undercoat.~Gary

Gary, you paint as well as you sculpt..........a tremendous combination. Love the facial fleah and the buff.

Hi Gary

A real pleasure to see your painted stuff, and obviously just as talented with the brush as you are with the putty!

Question: Oils? Oh just seen your second post. scrap that.

Gary,

How do you paint without attaching the limbs first? I've tried that quite a few times and have had alot of trouble once glued, getting the blends around the glued part right because it is usually weeks after the original mix has dried.

Thanks.

PS excellent stuff. Rev war is not my period but I had to buy this piece since Pete does really great work and I loved the character of it.

Gary,
Wow!
I really like the way you have weathered the leather gaiters and shoes; the two compliment each other very well. I am trying to achieve this same effect with a Guard Grenadier that I am working on and I can see how the effect should be. Great timing my friend!
The buff color has me purplexed , I see there is yellow, but it can't be straight mars yellow or ochre; what is the mix you used if you don't mind me asking?
Will you have this at MFCA this year?

All the best

Patrick

Guys, Thanks a lot, now that I posted pics I have to finish it, I'm sure I'll be reminded.

Patrick, I will have to check and see what colors I used. I'm not big on cataloging my paint mixtures, not to mention I probably do not paint the same color the same way twice. I do not know if it will be ready for the show, the pictures look better than the piece itself. I'm not totally comfortable entering stuff in shows, I mainly like coming to talk shop and show some people what I'm sculpting.

Lou, I test fit the arms with brass pins after clean-up and used a bit of putty around the arms to give me a no-seam look. I guess once they are put in place we'll see if the effort to do this payed off.~Gary

Thanks Gary...I appreciate your efforts to help...
Look forward to talking with you at MFCA!
Wow...great brush-work...

All the best

Thanks Gary, let me know how it goes. I'd like to give a shot but would rather learn from someone else's mistakes ;) ;)

I had a real nightmare with Pegaso's old Louis XV because of the way the arm was positioned - had to paint it first but then screwed it all up trying to attach it.

Excellent work as always though.

Lou

Finally, we get to see some painted stuff from you!!! Very well done my friend.

Now lets see that Fredricksburg vignette painted up

Jason

Gary, you are not only a great sculptor but also a good painter ... I wish you could recall your buff mix in oils.

....well, while you're recalling that, how about a "Total Recall" of the flesh, red, etc. as well...

(y) well done Gary

Thanks guys. If I get a chance I'll brush the dust off my paintbox and figure out the mix. I believe the basecoat was Vallajo Buff. I'll check.~Gary
