WIP Critique 75mm ACW Confederate Infantry

Your version looks great so far - I enjoyed painting this figure (by Pete Morton) but I chose the other head with the kepi. It's a very good sculpt, I love the pose.

Thanks Edward. I thought about the kepi and goatee head but decided I liked the rough and tumble look of this version more. I may put a lone star on his brim and place him as one of Hood's Texas rabble in the sunken road (Bloody Lane) at Sharpsburg....unless someone tells me the fence design is wrong for that battlefield He reminds me of that famous photo of the three captured rebs from the railroad cut at Gettysburg.

This is definately the work of the late great Pete Morton and sculpted for Mozs Company,Pete was working for/with Moz at the time.Pete did a couple of figures for Moz.

Thanks Mario. I understand that Moz's patterns, including this and his wonderful Light Brigade 75's, were bought by MMM but I don't see them on Ross' site at http://mitchesmilitarymodels.co.uk/

Anybody know if they are out of production?

If anyone is interested in the colours, the confederate grey shell jacket is from Scale 75's grey set out of the bottle with washes of diluted Liquitex sepia acrylic ink.

The flesh is from Life Colour, again with various colours of Liquitex inks including sepia, purple, red, red/brown, umber, green and blue. More to come.

The pants are Vallejo Luftwaffe blue mixed with ochre lightened with the addition of LC flesh tones. Pants were also repeatedly washed with diluted sepia to get a worn/dirty brownish feel.

Ps, I am sure there is a company in the States, that do 75mm belt plates and other bits an bob's for both sides of the ACW in brass etch.

Really turning out great. You've pulled off the grubby look spot on. I tried the liquitex inks and they turned out really glossy... how do you get them to finish so matte?

I have the same figure in the GA, I was going to get the etch set but $20 and I will only use one belt plate. No way.

@Colin - You have to dilute them a lot and apply them sparingly, ideally over a dry matte acrylic undercoat. I often dilute them with a water:ink ratio between 5:1 and 3:1. If I want deeper colour, i use multiple stains. I hope you didn't ruin anything good Colin.

Thanks Colin, seems I didn't dilute it enuff. No casualties though, tried it out on a scrap piece (a boot actually) over a solid matte base of German Grey. You know I have no patience and I did miss your demo on inks a few meetings back. (

One thing they did was to turn the US belt plate, upside down. I (when I get to it) hope to make one from lead foil and emboss it.
