I know this is a forum for figures, not books, but I can't resist recommending this superb memoir of French Sgt Maj. Paul Maze, who served as a volunteer interpreter and one man recon patrol for the British Army, first with the Scots Greys, then with 2nd Division, then with Gen. Gough and finally Gen. Rawlinson. Maze is a pretty unique character. In 1914, he volunteered for the French Army, but was turned down on medical grounds. He could have sat out the war with complete justification. Still wanting to serve, he attached himself to the British, bought his own uniform and a Triumph motorcycle and became an invaluable aid on division, corps and then army staffs. His personal accounts of the Somme and the attacks on and defense of Pozieres are absolutely hair-raising. And on top of everything else, he's a good storyteller and writer. This book is available thru the Naval and Military Press, ISBN 1845741498.

All the best,
Dan
