A Great Loss to the Figure World

This has been a awlful period of time for me. I received the news on Sunday and I was stunned, shocked. It took me a few hours to be able to post the news due to the utter disbelief and denial of Pete's passing.
I have known Pete for over 25 years, since the early days of Fort Royal. We were at a Birmingham show when he introduced himself, expressed an interest in sculpting for us and showed me something he had been working on. That figure is still on my website, such was the quality of sculpt and his capabilities, even then! Throughout the years Pete has sculpted numerous pieces for me, the mainstay of my range and business, thank you mate. Pete was a prolific sculptor and has worked for many leading companies and the lesser minions like me. He rubbed shoulders with the very best of our modelling peers and will stand tall in the history of model figures.
Much has been said of his character, yes he was a larger then life, bohemian and if anyone lived for the day it was him, I quite liked the Sunday morning Euro Pete though, boy those hangovers must have been bad, but there was another side to him. He could be a real pain in the backside to work with, but he was passionate about his craft, and yes he was a generous man. Of life, spirit and skill.
I had been in close contact with Pete over these few months, and I was due to collect a new figure this week. He was certainly in the zone and was his own prolific sculpting self. It pains me that in the future we won't see any new Pete work again. On Friday we chatted on the phone, boy he could talk! He wished me a good bank holiday, and as he always would say, " I think you're going to like this one mate" and then disapeared into time.
I wish I could find the right words for an epitaph, I can't, I am so lost for words as to know what to say. But maybe when you all read this, look in the display cabinet, or the grey army and I am sure that most of you, wherever you are in the world, will have a little piece of him there.
Thank you Pete for crossing my path in life, I am going to miss you,

Rob

I have not known Pete long, but I will share with the community some of his work that even surprised him.
I like 1/48 scale and am fairly new to figures compared to all of you. Well immediately I was drawn to this guy by the name of Pete Morton. I like a lot of sculptors, but Pete has done a lot of work in 1/48 scale. How much you may ask. See the following pictures. I put the following pictures of figures made for a company called Parabellum on Facebook and Pete saw them. His exact reaction was something like – “Bloody hell Phil-I didn’t realize I had sculpted so many of these for them!!!!”

Needless to say I have admired his works in other scales also. But here is an icon talking to a newbie like me. I continued to be in contact with him and follow his “posts” on forums and Facebook. And we were just getting ready to work together.
I use his 1/48 figures almost exclusively for competitions like the Chicago show. What really strikes me about his work is the ability to portray character through figures this small. Below is a good example (minus the painting); his very unique LRDG figure:

I have the highest regard for sculptors and their talent. And Pete has been and always will be one of my favorite sculptors. I hope that his family and true friends are doing well during this time.
I will paint his figures and marvel at his talent for years. No matter what struggles we have in life, our hobby does allow for some relief. I hope he realizes that by virtue of that alone he has impacted many other people. I will also wonder what might have been and that makes me sad.

I remember one year at the bmms in wandsworth when he appeard at the show ,with one of the first mobile phones ,it was like a brick, he felt so proud of it ,another time when we stayed up all night in the clifton with ray lamb, drank it dry ,we got the night porter to feed us cheese and buiscuits, most of his friends have spoken about his life qualities ,back in the day with the original lads ,we had some fantastic times,i only spoke to him thurs about getting the originals together for a bender ,time is running out for us were the last words i have off him ,Pete i will try to get down and have a good drink for you,but it will not be the same with out you, your up there now with some good sculptors ,at last they will have a good laugh, see if you can drink that bar dry, you,ll have a good go ,
will miss your Diamond cutter posts always a good laugh as well as being serious i could go on and on but its time to say good buy ole pal i,will see you some day ,Tony

I cant believe it and I am really really gutted.I havent been online for a while and am soo soo sorry that my mate Pete has gone.I will so miss you buddy,Euro definately wont be the same.
Pete Morton was truly a great person and in my opinion one of the greatest sculptors out there and he knew that I felt like that about him because I told him often enough !!!He still never really believed it though.I was just telling him at Folkestone that I was so happy to have aquired once again his stunning 120mm Highland King and Viking Mercenary figures which I had years ago....They will definately have pride of place in my collection now.My heart goes out to his family and all of his buddies especially Moz as I know how close they were.
Peter Morton I really will miss you bud !! R.I.P and we will drink to you in Folkestone mate.
Your friend
Pete

If anyone could raise a smile here on pF it was the very skilled Pete Morton.
I never met Pete but he made me feel as though I had known him all of my life.
A sad sad loss to us all for countless reasons.

To all of the colleagues and friends who have written a post about my brother Pete - I thank you all on behalf of me and my family. I think if you could have a tribute table for him at Euro would be wonderful and a comfort to our Mom. If you do I would be grateful if you could share photos with me so that I could print them and share them with his non-sculpting friends:) He never believed in himself or his talent so it is a great comfort to us to know that he was thought so highly of and dare I say liked/loved. So if ever any of you are in the Birmingham region, come and say hello to his family - Jules Morton

Jules I never met your brother in person but we had many a message which is doubly ironic as it looks like I only live down the road. He seemed a top bloke and I will really miss him about the place here. feel free to take any pic from here http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/the-winter-king.49531/ that you want I only wish my painting was up to his sculpting. My condolences to you and yours on your loss

Like everybody else I was stunned by the news of Pete's passing I was only conversing with him via planet figure a day or two before about his new ACW 200mm figure and to hear he had gone was truly sobering...I met Pete 2 years ago at Euro and his enthusiasm and character shone through and I really liked the guy and always liked to follow his post on here that we're passionate, funny irreverent and sometimes downright hilarious...the hobby has lost a truly likeable and talented bloke and my condolences go out to his family...I'll miss him

Hi Jules Pete did not quite finish the last figure for us and so it is now going to be finished as a tribute to him.I will send you a photo of it once we have him ready. it's been so sad his passingt but his memory will live on in the masters he sculpted God Bless him.

I am so sorry I haven't given the details of Pete's funeral until now but my mind has been all over the shop!!! Pete's final journey is on Friday 31 May 2013 at Woodlands Cemetery, Birmingham Road, Coleshill B46 1DP at 12 p.m. I know that most of you won't be able to attend but you were such a big part of his life I wanted you all to know out of the respect Pete had for you :) xXx

Hi Ian & Ellie, Thank you for what you are doing as a tribute to Pete. As you can imagine we are all still in shock and it is comforting for us to know that he was so highly thought of. Who the bloody hell am I gonna worry over and look after now????
