Hi Neal

Both are coming on really nicely , not normally into modern stuff but I do like that Lifeguard , the detail is really starting to come through on the helmet

Looking forward to more updates

Happy bench time

Thanks Nap. The sculpted detail on the helmet is great and helps to lift what otherwise might seem a plain figure uniform wise. The tricky bit is balancing how far to take any shading/highlighting on the helmet on what in real life is such a highly polished piece of head wear. Don’t think I’ll get the effect Chezzie got with the chrome paint pen but it’s getting there.

Both look superb. Like the red coats so far.
Thanks clrsgt. For these two figures I didn’t add as much Madder Brown to the Cadmium Red base as I would do for something like campaign wear and I’m happy with how it’s turned out.

Really looking super, it is nice to see how others tackle their painting when I'm doing the same lovely bust.

I think both the Household Cavalry busts will be on my shopping list soon.

Cheers
Geoff
Thanks Geoff. Like you say, it’s good to see different takes on a particular piece and the Black Watch bust is a gem. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the Household Cavalry ones either.

A few more pictures of progress on these two. I’ve painted the collar and epaulettes on the Lifeguard in oils and also the plume. I was down in London earlier in the year and had a visit to the Household Cavalry museum at Horse Guards where I picked up a book entitled Uniquely British- a year in the life of the Household Cavalry. I’ve used this as my main reference for this figure as there are plenty of colour photos. I noticed that the plume seemed to always have the look of an off/stained white what I would call smokers white and I’ve gone for that look by adding a bit of golden ochre to the base white then highlighting with pure white.
As for the Black Watch Figure I’ve done the sash and laid on the blue oil base for the plaid and facings. I’ve painted the belt in oils but the lacework is just oil base at present, detailing to come. Things were moving along really nicely with this one until I realised I’d mistaken his left sleeve for part of the plaid and painted it blue- in the words of that famous philosopher Homer Simpson, Dooooh!!

Some updated pics of the Black Watch Major. I’ve re-painted the left sleeve in the correct colour (needs to dry) and tackled the tartan and some of the other details on the body. Still got to complete the bonnet, hair and the diced band but getting closer to the finish line.

Very nice work young man, looking at yours I think I need to redo the orange colour on my King's SA medal, mine is too pale.

Cheers
Geoff
Thanks Geoff. When I was checking on the internet for reference photos for the QSA Medal there were differences in the centre stripe colour, some looking very ochre in colour whilst others leaned more towards an orange so I suppose there’s some scope for interpretation unless it was just a case of fading.

Going by the colour ref. in the Taprell Dorling book of Ribbons and Medals the QSA centre strip is a slightly paler orange than the KSA, but your KSA is just about correct, I should have checked after painting, but that is not a problem.

Cheers
Geoff
