right so here is a little(?) study i am on at the moment, Clubhouse are having a 'Jam' themed on Cyborgs ect. i mixed the Teletubbies with a bit of Westworld and other stuff i guess. i like Elves in films so her 'face' is quite Elfin.
i'll go pic by pic and chat if you interested. Tony, first pic is for you and shows a method of building a head and marking up the features. i have several i use and am happy to share.
The figure is 1/7 and 249mm without hair and was made initially to practise my proportion Cannons which i tend to lose during build up so i am going back to carving back. I also hate Knees!! but am improving by sculpting parts of the human i.e - a leg. the 'head' is 28mm and the figure is 8 heads.

the head is a core of pure SS firm over a loop of 4mm aliminium wire, i soften my mix to say 60/firm to 40/SSculpey pink and begin to shape the cranium; i build the 'dome' at and around the back and add a flat 'mask' piece to the front -shaped to match the facial shape- then blend and mark it up as above. more to come..... regards - tim:)

sure! :)

cool, ok Tony. some aspects of models are you kinow from buying and painting need pinning so the wire is for the hair (or a hat)to adhere to. i could make it removeable by placing a suitable barrier like foil down first so the 'wig' would come off. shall i show more or do you want to ask a bit more mate?

regards -- tim :)

full wip shot....

here's where i am so far; working up the legs and feet and heres what she'd look like with the extra ball bearing. she is only an Android for the jam after which she'll be stripped and completed in to my original idea....

all the best folks ---- tim :)

Cool, it's good to see how different people sculpt differently (mainly the differences between you and Tony :D). I like the theme since I haven't seen any cyborgs yet (apart from the warhammer stuff).

Daniel

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the pics. It really does help to see how other sculptors build up their creations. I have to say that's one cute looking cyborg, with a touch of elf about her too!

How long have you been working on this sculpt mate??

Hi Tim,

Thanks for posting your pics of your very cute cyborg. How long have you been working on her?? It's difficult to see the difference between SSFG and the other blends of sculpey, but I think I now understand the different textures and their working properties.

hi Tony,
not long mate, a few days is all she's taken. i can belt 'em out if need be and thats one of my many faults! having started in the Miniature sculpting arena -30mm- i got used to working fast plus at small scale you can 'fudge' detail and get away with it but once you go large your flaws show.... and boy! mine were many and terrible. so i decided after some embarassing posts on here in 05 that i would re-learn so i put down the Epoxy and picked up the Poly clay. i hope i, like you will improve step by step so thanks and glad you like her.

the blend do get covered up as you go which is why you end up having to be awre where your fingers are! i squished many a detail in the beginning mate. i am glad you are enjoying poly clay, i figured this thread would be a cool place for us all to talk Sculpey.

i raked her down a bit last night to slim and flatten the rib cage as i felt it was too deep. really loving wire loop tools for dialing in an area. i am taking her to Euro most likely along with some bits i promised folks last year, nice to talk shop!

all the best to every one --- tim :)

Alright, since ive read you both have used both 2 part epoxy sculpting mediums and poly clay, what would you think is better to start learning on?

Iv'e made an agreement with myself that im going to finish what i have started so far so just until then, i'm not ganna' have a go at sculpting but i just want to get your opinions on whats better to start with. (i have a fair few figures and tanks to finish painting lol :D)

Daniel

hmmm...

well Dan, i started with Green stuff cause i sculpted in 30mm at first. it is a good medium and hols incredible detail but can be difficult to use as a noob cos as some say, its like using Toffee! hence the need to warm and lube your tools.
polyclay is like plasticine, no mixing, easy to knead and apply out of the packet, and best of in in my experience, to blend- something the GS at first is a pain- also you get as much time to correct any errors or whatever. today i gave the Android a Masectomy and carved her down here and there, no fuss , no mess or dust and no sanding. i can pop her breasts back on no probs.
it was garyjd who turned my head to polyclay when he did his sbs figure and some Forgeworld sculptors who i met. i have made polyclay my main putty but would use Epoxy if i had/needed to for a set part.
I f you see Tony's thread, i describe a trick for working fully un-cured. buy a small kids size brick of it and have a go. good thing is its recyclable. some of the forgeworld guys dont bake as do others, they just mold up and re-use. youll most likely do 'one' offs so will bake it. paints up well too which GS does not.
hope this was informative mate ---- tim :)

Thanks heaps, I think I will buy some poly clay then and some green stuff. I have seen on coolminiornot.com that they sell the green stuff and i think i might get that from there and I will ask tony later where he got his poly clay from.
