WIP Andy's Cossack

First Day, 15 October 2013

The oldtimer car season is ( almost) over now - time for me to go back to the craft table and begin my new " figure project 2014 " .

Some of you already know the character I have chosen this time .

My friend Andy Cairns in New Zealand has sculpted a beautiful Zaporishian Cossack of the 17th Century - and I took part by research the details of this figure.

We wanted to show as many of the details of the extensive equipment, which Zaporozhian of that times took into field.

On military campaigns there were none logistics or supply, so a Cossack in the 17th Century had to carry all with him, he needed to live and to fight.

And that was not a little ... :



Template for the equipment was this photo - and every item hi have specially researched before Andy sculpted it.



For the casual attitude of the Cossack this photo has brought the inspiration ... :




I assisted Andy with the details and he has emailed photos of his progress - from the first idea ...

After the Kuban-Cossack bust it was my second project with Andy – and again it was a great pleasure for me to work with him!

This is a beautiful figure in 90mm scale - I 'm looking forward to it, to build this figure together and paint .

I intend as always to write about my new project daily “construction diary” and show you the progress of work every day up to the end - not just on weekends because I work traditionally nothing .

Glad to see you back in action Martin. I look forward to your "diaries". This is a great figure, I remember the SBS of it's sculpting and was impressed by the detail and accuracy. The pose really captures the almost arrogant confidence of the Zaporozhian Cossack.
You know this subject is very close to my heart and I know you will do a great job... my Didushka would have loved this figure.

2.Day, 16. October 2013

In this form the figure arrived me...:









There are three alternative heads to choose, first one with a fur cap “Papakha”...


…a bare head with the typical curl of the Zaporozhian Cossacks...



and an third one with a Polish Kolpak cap...:



For I have "baldy" and "Papakha" in my collection, it is for me the version with the Kolpak.

As you can see in the pictures also, the distance from the casting blocks to the parts is sometimes very narrow.
If you saw or cut there, you have the guaranty to break the parts, because the kinetic energy has to go somewhere.

I made myself an extra tool for cutting:

On an old soldering iron with wire I attach a pin - and let the whole thing got very hot...:



After that you can cut through the resin, such as through butter.

I like all the head options... I like the one with the scalplock, but I understand your choice.

I really like the hotwire cutting tool you've made. Removing small parts from casting blocks is a nightmare... this looks like it would be very helpful.

Meanwhile, the small pieces are cleaned.

Today I have cleaned up the two major parts (upper and lower body) and the head, I want to use...:



I'm especially happy about the fact that I managed to get the two earrings free without “producing” some damages...

5 Day 21 October 2013

It's been starting with “producing” damages!

After critical examination, I noticed that I was a little too “generous” when cleaning the right hand of the figure.

So I had to resculpt three fingertips and half a finger. And I also sculpted a ring to his hand…:



And because the sanding pad of my "Proxxon" also left at traces at both of the Cossack boots and the "Milliput" was just mixed anyway, I repaired this also.

Today I have the boots with "Milliput" carefully "plastered" ...

Next step is today fixing together the lower and upper body.

How I'll do it exactly?

First of all, I look for two parts to be joined, the "center" ...



Then I drill ...:




Into the hole then I put a "quid" from FIMO ...:




... and press the parts "dry" firmly together. The "quid" show me on the counterpart, where do I have to drill ...:
