I have no great knowledge of the Mongol side of the event but do I remember seeing a documentary pointing out that it was the lack of skill of enforced labour and a rushed job in construction of the fleet that was probably responsible for the ships inability to ride out the storms.

Yes, and also the majority of the Mongol navy were river craft and three times the size of any Japanese craft. Not good to ride out an storm in the sea. The Mongol army got Khanned to get on those ships.
