Hi all,

Sorry for not posting for awhile. Well, here's my first completed offering. He has been an enjoyable figure to paint.
Any constructive criticism welcome.

I would not agree it is over polished. Armour was a massive expense and status symbol and classical and medieval texts constantly talk about polished/ burnished/ shinning armour. The effort in keeping it bright is minimal, especially if you have servants, and they are not campaigning in the same manner as modern era soldiers.

This is one thing I looked into. Although slaves were employed to carry out simple camp duties, I could find no real evidence of their involvement with their masters armour apart from the shield. This is one reason why I went for the unpolished look. Apart from the leg greaves, they have more of a polished look.
If the figure had been of a medieval subject, then yes, it would be more highly burnished.

I've been dipping in and out of the bust version of this figure between other projects.
Although I suspect the armour was highly polished, possibly for dramatic impact reflecting the Greek sun (it must have been like wearing an oven) like you I've opted for a more muted bronze with very subtle tints of green to add some variation. Being metallic paint I'll let it 'cure' then lightly burnish it to add some sheen.
Cheers

I did contemplate the bust, but obviously opted for the smaller option. I did some research about the armour and could only find out that they had their slaves polish their shields, once the copper lined bronze ones came into use. I should think it cut an impressive sight when they turned them ( as you mentioned ) as one into the Greek sun.
I wet blended the metallics on the figure itself. All told, it was a very interesting figure to paint.

Hi Nap

Thank you. It would be interesting to see a reenactment using this type of armour. It certainly would become an oven. I believe some armours were copper lined. The weight and fighting barefoot barefoot must have taken sheer strength of character.

It has been a enjoyable figure to paint and given me a taste for ancient figures. I have my eye on a RP Models camel rider a friend has in his stash and is thinking of selling. Plus I've just treated myself to a RP Models Roman Cataphract bust.

I'll have a look at the competition, thank you.

Cheers

Paul
