I have often wondered what lovely little gems of military history books are sat on members book-shelves. Be it singular, or by volume(s). I would be very interested to know.:D

For my own part, I have a full, 5 volume set of 'Napier's, 'History of the 'Peninsular War'. Printed. c. 1885-90. Which belonged to another published military historian, (including foot-notes).

What do you have?:)

Regards,

Mark

I got a complete cabinet edition of Kinglake's Crimea and complete set of Nolan's Russian War in the 80's from Hay on Wye for about 20 pounds.

I have Napier too, from a Toronto antique shop. Never found Oman sadly.

George Six's Dictionnaire Biographique des Generaux et Amiraux de la Revolution et de l'Empire is a treasured two parter. A useful more recent work is quintin's Dictionnaire des Colonels de Napoleon.

And its not old but after many years searching I got my own copy of Pigeard's monster limited edition Etoiles de Napoleon (1000 copies).

The latter three are great when doing Napoleonic personalities.

I have a Napier set too, but by definition is not antique because its a 1992 reprint. I envy you! :notworthy:

I do have a copy of Charlemagne by H.W. Carless Davis, M.A. It has a copyright of 1899 with a print date of 1909. I really like this copy as its bound in red moroccan leather with gilt decoration and marbled endpapers and edges.

Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, both volumes of the first 1885 printing.

There are a few in my collection that in a few more years will be considered antique. :)

Hi Mark,
Interesting thread. I suppose my nicest find was The Red Book - Natal Press Reports Anglo -Zulu War 1879 limited to 500 copies. There are lots of original books I would like but need to get the lottery numbers up first. I also have a few signed copies from the likes of Ian Knight & Julian Whybra.(y)
cheers

. I had a feeling you would have some old books on the 'Zulu War', call it intuition. However a limited edition is a damned good find and buy!(y)

Richie, first editions are always going to be rare and expensive. When I was able I used to scour the charity shops, and house clearance centres. Every now and then I would find an absolute gem. However since the onset of 'E-Bay',.. These shops have been picked dry by the opportunist, looking for a quick profit.

Sign of the times I guess.:(
