Hey planeteers,

I do some recreational epee fencing locally here in New Jersey, I also fenced in some competions (got my tukus kicked) which was fun. Are there any fencers out there amoung the plantet group that would be interested in getting together for some fencing bouts? There are several salles in my area that have open fencing or we can locate clubs near to major shows like Long Isand or Valley Forge.
Just a thought......I know it doesn't pertain to figures per say but thought I would throw it out there.

Regards,
John Stonaker

I would have challenged you mate but I am from Malta ... epee is great fun, so maybe if we cross each other swords maybe in a US show one day I will come prepared!

By the way are there any planateers who enjoy fencing?

I have just recently taken up fencing this year. I have been doing foil but tried epee for the first time last week. I started soon after my 8 year old son Ethan wanted to try lessons. He is pretty good for his age. I do OK against the other 40 something parents that do it for something to do together with their children. However, when I fence some of the teenagers in the club, I get my butt kicked pretty routinely. It's great fun though and excellent exercise.

BTW, I am tempted to paint these guys

Epee-ist here :)

Although I haven't fenced in about 2 years, I've started myself on a health and fitness programme to condition myself for my return to fencing next year. I'm keen to start sabre in addition to epee.

My fencing highlights have got to include the many, many bruises due to not wearing a plastron :) and being beaten by a wee thing of a girl half my age! LOL, she toyed with me a bit until I got one strike in... then before I knew it the bout was over LOL :)

:) No,No,No.....Fencing is for the ruling classes. As a good English serf I follow the law of the land (well almost) and practise my skills with the good old longbow.
Though it is only 50lb draw weight not the 90 or more! of Crecy and Agincourt.
The statute for English yeomen to practise everyday with the bow has never been recinded....

Hey, shame I'm not near you... although I'm not sure how an épée or even a sabre would stand up to a katana

Hey Gang,

Thanks for all the replys!

Ivan: If you ever get out to MFCA in May let me know and bring your whites. I don't
know if you could get the weapons through security but I can alwasy lend
you epees.

Einion,

A local marshal arts school near me offers lessons in Japanese fencing, which I think uses wooden versions of the katana. Is this the type of fencing that you do?

Inigo Montoya: You are wonderful.
Man in Black: Thank you; I've worked hard to become so.
Inigo Montoya: I admit it, you are better than I am.
Man in Black: Then why are you smiling?
Inigo Montoya: Because I know something you don't know.
Man in Black: And what is that?
Inigo Montoya: I... am not left-handed.
[Moves his sword to his right hand and gains an advantage]
Man in Black: You are amazing.
Inigo Montoya: I ought to be, after 20 years.
Man in Black: Oh, there's something I ought to tell you.
Inigo Montoya: Tell me.
Man in Black: I'm not left-handed either.
[Moves his sword to his right hand and regains his advantage]

Inigo Montoya, Man in Black... What are we talking about here? Mandy Patinkin meets Guy Williams?
Its a movie from the 80´s. I think the english title is "Princess Bride". Its with Peter Falk and Andre the Giant and a few more.

Good fun family entertainment. :)

Cheers

Pretty much, yes. But it's likely to be Kendo, which is the Japanese equivalent of modern sport fencing - very distant from the original combat forms. Very exciting all the same, but a bit frustrating from the point of view of developing all the wrong muscle memory :)

Ive used to fence and I was quite good at if I might say so myself.
Started at 7 and quit at 16. I started with Fleurette(Florette) which was the norm for childen then and moved on to rapier after that.

I actually qualified for the Swedish national team as a youth and attended some international rumbles. But I got sick off the bad attitude and bad sportsmanship among fencers, at least here in Sweden. People protesting judges calls, boys between 10-16 crying when loosing, refusing to shake hands afterwards, having special tuned weapons at practise when the weapons weren checked etc.

Took on Karate after that but I never became half as good at Karate as I were in fencing. Still I like Karate better and thinking of taking it up again.

Talking to Mike Blank about this it turned he had been fencing too at the same time as me so we must have engaged at least three times. I like to think that I won but I really cant remember.

Cheers

Janne,

I'm sure the same goes on here in the US but at the meets I've attended the youth (cadets?) fencers seem quite mature. I was taught to respect the judge's decesion and if you felt the need to question do it politely and accept the out come like a gentleman or gentlewomen. People are always trying to blame someone else for their mistakes...

Best Regards,
John Stonaker

I always thought fencing would be cool to do as a kid. The thing is aside fom possibly college teams it's not a sport that I think is being done in Western Pennsylvania.~Gary
