Just wondering:
Are there any good horsepainting tutorials around online?
A website article would be fine. Buying books, up till now have always cost me a lot of money for about 50% tops of a book being actually usefull in teaching me how to paint. I have very dated copy of Verlindens The System which 'deals'with painting horses but what seems to result in a very bleak horse compared to what I see around on this site.

Love to hear about tips, links and articles on the internet.

Hope I chose the right subforum.

The photos in Rio Rondo's model horse galleries are a good resource. They also produce a rather good binder on painting scale model horses.

You want to page down and look at equigenesis galleries.

There is also a good link on horse colour genetics.

Regrettably Riorondos book on Painting horses has been out of print for some years, print 3 was being prepared in 2008 and still hasn't appeared, if anyone has any more up to date information on this I would be pleased to hear.

Hello! I'm new to the forums but not new to painting and I specialize in equine models. So when I saw your post, I had to jump in. I hope that's okay.

The book at Rio Rondo is by Carol Williams and is very good. I have it and it's only available on the secondary market - and sometimes the price is crazy.

I'm currently working on a painting horses tutorial and posted the first one on CMON (I hope it's okay if I post the link). It discusses primarily acrylic and wet-blending techniques. There's going to be a series for the various colors. Currently my WIP is Pegaso's Roaming Knight and I'm painting the horse a loud black and white sabino and he's mixed media - primarily pan pastels, dry pigments and acrylics.

I'm happy to help if I can. :D

Feel free to post a link to any website you wish to. No issues here at pF.

BTW- That is a VERY nice tutorial. Looking forward to the rest. Have you seen these videos by Michigan Toy Soldier?

Another option is to look at the relatively cheap but excellent large format soft cover books available from your local art store. While they focus on 2D painting, the horsey ones provide good colour and breed data for use in the 3D environment.

Unfortunate that the Rio Rondo book is OOP. I guess they are missing a business opportunity.

Thanks Jim! I'm very glad you liked the article.

Ya know, I could have sworn I responded to this earlier but maybe I forgot to hit Post after Preview. It's been one of those days! lol!

I had seen those vids posted by Michigan Toy (I love "window shopping" on their website. lol!) But those vids deal with oils. Oils, even with an accelerator can take a long time to dry. As much as I would love to try them, with three cats (one very fluffy) and one insanely furry dog (he's a Sheltie) there's no way I could keep hair out of the paint. :(

For tabletop miniatures, I use acrylics and acrylic retarder and wet-blend the color. For 1:32 scale and larger, I use mixed media - dry pigment and pastels with matte sealer in order to get the blends. The details such as white markings, hooves and whatnot I use colored pencils and acrylics.

But if you're an oil painter, those vids are great! :D
