masterpuppet,

A few questions. How many figures are you talking about making, and what do you want to make them out of? If you want to mke them out of metal then you are talking about some equiment that is pretty expensive. If you are talking about resin then it is some thing that can be done on a small scale and you do not need a lot of expensive equiment. There are a few things that you might want to invest in if you plan on doing this for any length of time like a presure chamber.

Sorry it took so long for any one to post a reply on this thread but that is the way it is some times. I posted a question on the painting forum and there are still no replys. even with quite a few views.

Ok, it's time to pay back for all the assistance that I have been getting on my sculpting challange.

I am VERY familiar with all forms of Mold Making EXCEPT making metal molds. And with regards to metal molds, I am in the process of learning and will make my first one in about three weeks.

It sounds like the thread was starting down the right track and the right questions were being asked. I think it would be wise to continue that trend, so I pose the following set of questions in order to move forward toward a solution.
  • What is the master going to be made from; clay, wax, metal, gum, etc?

  • What is the master going to be made from; clay, wax, metal, gum, etc?
  • What do you believe that the temperature of the master will sustain, when will it start to melt or slump; 100 f, 125 f, ....... in 25 degree increments ..... 400 f? Each material will have a point at which it will be destroyed prior to being able to get a good mold. The lower on the spectrum of temperature that you are, the colder the processing must be to get the initial mold. RTV on the low end and Vulcanized Rubber on the high end at 300 - 400 F
  • What material will be inserted into the mold to create a copy? Wax, Low Temp Metals, Resins, etc.
  • How many reproductions are desired from the mold before it has to be remade?
  • How much detail is required for the mold to reproduce? Facial features to the detail of hair, or general curves or something in betweek. If it were a medallion, would the detail be at the level of a dime, or would it be at the detail of a 4" diameter medallion with the smallest leter being 1/8 inch high.
  • What is the final product that you hope to attain once you have the mold? Does the final product come out of the mold, or do you intend to produce something like a wax to be used in a casting method like Lost Wax Casting (Which Is What Most Of My Work Is In Silver, Gold, and Pewter
