Trotzkij is Murdered
Lew Davidowitsch Trotzkij…
... one of the main actors of the Bolshevik revolution, creator and victorious commander of the "Red Workers 'and Peasants' Army" as well as Lenin's closest confidante, was first ousted after Lenin's death by his successor Yossif Stalin, then ousted from the Communist Party, finally arrested and exiled and then expelled from Russia.
In exile, Trotsky works, writes and speaks obsessively against Stalin and his politics.
The landlord doesn't like that at all!
So the Soviet government is now mobilizing against the hated adversary!
First of all, the Soviets are increasing their pressure on those countries that are granting asylum to Trotsky.
In the USSR, the show trials of 1936 and 1937 are the prelude to the extermination of the "Trotskyists"; In Europe, murder squads of the Stalinist secret police GPU are at work to eliminate opposition members.
In February 1938 NKVD agednts try successful, Trotskij's son, Lev Sedov ...
... to murder in Paris, who heads the Trotskists' international secretariat there.
In March 1939, Stalin calls his secret service chief Lavrentiy Beria ...
... and the deputy head of the foreign department of the NKVD, Pavel Sudoplatow,
... to himself in the Kremlin.
The "Father of Nations" submits his assessment:
"When Trotskij dies, there is no longer a central figure in the Trotskyist movement. When Trotskij is eliminated, all danger disappears."
And then the head of the house gave Sudoplatov the following order:
"You will be at the head of the raiding party so that the operation against Trotskij is a success."
Trotskij now lives in Mexico in a rented and heavily guarded villa in Coyoacàn ...
Sudoplatov, who already gained experience in the "fight against Trotskism" during the Spanish Civil War, proceeds according to a classic pattern.
Two independent murder squads are formed, each of which knows nothing of the existence of the other and operates separately.
The first attack on the night of May 24th and 25th 1940 failed!
A command led by the Stalinist artist David Alfaro Sequeiros ...
... attacks Trotsky's house with machine guns and can penetrate inside.
Nevertheless, Trotskij and his wife Natalia Sedowa ...
... as well as her grandson can escape from the killers!
Segueiros will spend a few years in prison and then be expelled from Mexico.
So now the second assassin team comes into play!
The central figure of this second team is the Catalan Ramón Mercader ...:
Equipped with a false identity, he sneaks into the confidence of the American Trotskist Sylvia Ageloff ...
... one who has access to Trotsky and introduces Mercader to the famous man. Mercader appears as a wealthy Belgian under the code name "Jacson".
On August 20, 1940, Trotsky asked the fake "Jacson" into his study.
The visitor allegedly wrote a political article for Trotsky to read.
After a few minutes, Natalia Sedova and the guards hear a piercing scream!
"Jacson" has Trotsky, who is at the desk ...
... sits with an ice ax that he had hidden under his coat, smashed in the skull.
This still from a police film shows Trotsky's fallen chair and the place where he wrestled with Mercader ...:
Here police officers present the murder weapon ...:
Incidentally, the murder tool was long thought to be lost and only reappeared in Mexico in 2012 ...:
Even though the weapon penetrated seven centimeters into the brain, Trotskij is wrestling with his killer.
The guards who rush in and strike at Mercader, he can still urge them in clear words:
"Don't kill him. He needs to talk!"
The seriously injured Trotskij is rushed to a clinic. Despite his serious injuries, he can still speak clearly.
He whispers to his secretary Joseph Hansen: "I believe in the victory of the Fourth International."
He kisses Natalia, who does not leave his side, before an emergency operation is attempted. Lev Trotskij dies during the night to August 21, 1940 ...:
The presumably last photo of healthy Trotskij - in the company of friends on an excursion ...:
