I know that there are many suppliers of bases and plinths out there but how do you choose one that is the right size for your scale of bust (1/12th, 1/10th, 1/8th, 1/6th), etc?

I used to make my own, and now that I'm getting back to painting after 20 years away and finding it hard to find bases, I see why I ended up doing that. Most of the figures I have to work on need only 1.5" cubes and I prefer not having trim at the bottom. Amazon has listings for hardwood turning blanks in various sizes that work just fine. A miter saw, bit of finish sanding, and stain is all that's needed. Simple, but then the figure and not the base should be the focus.

Basing figures and busts to make them look their best can be tricky, and expensive! For years I was like, "Oh, it's finished, I gotta find a bit of timber to glue it to..." These days I'm the opposite. I won't even start a figure unless I know I can 'base it' well. Proportion is important, as Nap rightly says. A piece hanging over a base is fraught with danger. Thing is, you don't want 'dead space', which is the enemy of a good figure. And we've all seen a horror show of a figure on a base that Michaelangelo would be proud of!

Hi Pete,
I always find basing is the most personal choice. How do you want to display you collection? is it themed, do you want uniformity of size, timber and finish or is your collection more eclectic so you want a base to reflect that. Is the base to be part of the landscape to reflect your piece.
It's got to look right to you there is no set formula you will see the same figures and busts at shows all based differently.

cheers
Richie

I make my own bases but they are all plinth types. I have a chop saw, so I get a straight edge. I can source nice olive wood in the size and length I want. I paint 75s so my bases are 40 x 40 x 65 high.
