Hi All! Here's my latest. He's a bavarian infantryman as he may have appeared at the battle for Weissenberg. It was inspired by a figure in Carl Rochling's painting 'The Storming of the Landau Tor, Weissenberg, 4 August 1870'.

Scale is 54ish built with Magic Sculp. Head is from Hornet.

Sorry for not posting an sbs on this fella, I've been VERY busy w/ new house stuff and work, all my spare time has been w/ this guy.

Thanks for looking! :)

That's a really nice sculpt Jason, i can't wait to see him all done and painted. Keep it up man.

Hey Jason,

Looks like your usual outstanding work. Very well done. I look forward to seeing him with a coat of paint.(Robt. Goulet!?)

Wow !

Jason you captured the movement and the uniform/ equipment wonderfully !

I'm still shaping the prussians helmet and last bits but have developed my next figure, a running - bavarian :)
Armature is finished and I'm waiting for the right day to start with clothing him.
Also did some more experiments with several puttys.

Hope to post pics this week.

I'm amazed how you do just about everything from MS. And I love that painting of Röchling.

Jason, Great figure! Love the helmet, and the composition is top shelf. Welcome back, it's nice to see your bench back in action again.~Gary

Thanks guy's!

Manfred, can't wait to see your Prussian and your Bavarian project. This is the first figure I've built that is all MS. I like the unifrom look it gives, it's tough with the small details but the trick is to wait till it cures a little before working.

I had to do ALOT of searching for Bavarian equipment details. I have a few Uniformes and Tradition magazines that include articles on Bavarians. Now the trick is to find out what regiments carried the Werder rifle. If I'm not mistaken these men are with the 4th Bav. Division and what the men in the painting are carrying is the Werder. From the little research I've done, it say's that only jager battalions used the Werder. If this is true, why are the cuffs and collars of the figures in the painting in red instead of green? Anybody have a clue? I would wait for the Osprey book on these troops but I'm too damn impatient to wait!

Jason !!!! It's GREAT to see a new FP war figure from you - and by the looks of it this one is going to be your best yet !!! Isn't that ill. by Rochling one of your favourites? ;)

Jason , that is great stuff. Apart from everything else I like the pose.Very imaginativ. Well done.

Good stuff Jason! I really like your clean sculpting style and that helmet is a lovely piece of work.

Jason,

the best copy of that painting I have is on the cover of Military Illustrated December 1991.

You are right, the soldiers have the Werder. As to who had them I variously read "Five Jäger battalions" or "3 regiments were partially armed with them" .
I never read WHICH units carried it. But not even all Jäger battalions had this outstanding weapon.

The unit storming the "Landauer Tor", the Landau gate, were the bavarian 5th Line Regiment together with the 10th Jägerbattalion. Took them three attempts and the help of some prussian artillery to overcome the oppostion. So the picture might show infantrymen and Jäger intermingled.

Jäger had green cuffs and collar and a hunting horn on the ammunition pouch and small woolen pom poms.
So, is Röchling wrong ? Was the picture a wrongly colourized copy by someone else? I don't know.

So I can not offer any real help :(.

I think the next 1870 Osprey might provide answers but I wouldn't wait for that, too ;).
My figure will use a white metal Podewils from Hecker&Goros.

Your clean work is most amazing. Mine always looks as if several people had worked on it.

Jason,

Sorry to say this repeatedly but this is better than the last one! You are really doing some nice work. I look forward to seeing this one painted.

Joe

Jason, beautifully sculpted, I really like it,I'm looking forward to seeing it painted. ;)

Keep up the great sculpting

Cheers

Roc :)

Thanks again fella's! I appreciate the kind words. I'm feeling more comfortable working on difficult poses.

Manfred, thanks for the info my friend. I'm going to convert the ICM Chasspot into a Werder- they're practically identical! I'll just add another barrel band and cock to the breech.

BTW, here's another view.
