As long as you remember to use a 3/8 gripley It stops the elliptical cam gradually sliding up the beam shaft and catching on the flange rebate, with disastrous results as you can no doubt imagine.

Like gordy says you can use a tank beofre the chamber which is pre-evacuated to hasten the pump down time.
Steve the gripley has been out of fashion for years, the metric pinch bearing is now the norm ,using a flying weight which acts as a lever, the centre of the bearing being an eccentric coil of clutch washers is compressed against the shaft and stops it moving, get with the times man!
