Guy,

I started painting his face on Christmas afternoon (Saturday), but really got going on Sunday. I painted about a half day on Monday (played golf in the morning), and painted all day yesterday. Just an hour or so today to finish him. Altogether he probably took 16-20 hours to paint.

Bill,

Another beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Is that blue on the uniform mixed using the Testors blue you mentioned earlier? Do you still lighten it with Humbrol flesh?

It seems to me that your painting style has become more "painterly" with less blending than say 10 years ago. Did you make a conscious effort to do that, or is it just a matter of your style evolving over the years? Then again, maybe I'm just seeing things.

As usual another outstanding figure.I always think by seeing your figures that I have way to do before arriving to your perfection and this is frustrating but also very very motivate. Thanks again Bill to share your knowledge.I always have your Masterclass book under the hand like a bible. :)
Best wishes for 2005 !

Dear Bill,

Fantastic piece of work of art. Not only are you good at the sculpting, and painting but also FAST.

I notice that you do not blend some of that highlight but rather leave it to our eyes to blend it. Is this intentional? Please correct me if I am wrong.

regards :)

 16-20 hrs to finish a masterpiece not only awstending but fast ... surely the name master in arts fit in all your wonderful pieces!

May I ask you to share with us how you tackle the blues ... I remember reading in your 'old' book that you used to keep the blues minimal in highlights etc ... do you still tackle the same aproach!

All the best Bill, sorry cannot make it to WE but looking forward to meet you again somewhere in Europe in the future!

Hope 2005 will be a wonderfull prusianic influenced year for you!

Wong,

I am blending blue just as much as before, but the sculpting of this figure resulted in very sharp folds in the trouser legs. This, combined with the photo lighting, creates an impression of sharp edges in the painting.

The 16-20 hours was painting only. He took another 16 or so hours to sculpt (would have been more without the resin castings I had previously sculpted).

Dark blue shading should always be subtle and yes, I usually add flesh as a highlight color. However, a weathered uniform like this required some Leather (Matt 62) color to be added to the blue highlights, to create the impression of dirt and wear.

Horan isn't human! It's hard to believe the amount of quality, imaginative output from one person. I am stupified. And I only looked at his planet gallery!!!

I agree with Linda; Bill's work is simply amazing and an incredible source of inspiration... ;)

I am looking forward to seeing his work in Atlanta this year, and hope to hear more about how he achieves his affects with enamels...

All the best

Patrick
