Hi everyone,

I'm painting a figure that has really BLACK hair and beard.
I used acrylic paint ( flat black ) as base paint.

How can I get some effects and lights over the base paint ( only flat black seems very poor ) :) ?

txs,

Arthur.

Hello !
Black hair are never really black. You should probably add another colour to your black base colour. The colour you add depends of the race of the figure portraid. For american indians and asiatics I think you can go to blue or purple and make your higlights adding white. For arabics the hair are very dark brown so you add brown to your base coat and highlight it with flesh colour.
I'm also waiting for the other comments as this is a very interesting question...

When I do Asians (Mongols, etc) I use the base color of weathered black and then drybrush lightly with dark brown, It gives the hair good depth and detail. For Native Americans I use Jet black base color and lighten with weathered black with just a little feathering of dark blue depending on the light source.

Hi,
I think this ties in with the other thread of creating your own
dark colours black for want of a better word.

I would suggest as with any dark area, to work from a mid tone.
In the case of very dark hair, may be a blue/black leaning towards the blue
then using pure black only for the darkest shadows i/e behind ears,
the base of the skull very sparingly. Higlights, more blue and if needed
blue/tiny amount of white.

Like every thing else experimentation is the key,try a few things
out on scrap material until you are happy enough to put the result
on your figure.

What figure are you working on?

Thanks for all the tips.
I'll will try to use this techniques on a scraped head...i'll probably try oil paint to highlights and shadows.

BTW, the figure I'm finishing is a resin bust of Saddan Hussein ( made by Warriors - USA ), a soon as I finish it, I will post some pics for comments.

Txs again for the help,

Arthur
