Is this a second Waterloo book by Cornwell?
I have one of his also titled "Waterloo Companion"... an overview of the campaign and the three battles with a lot of references from contemporary diaries. Not sure exactly when it was published but it's definitely not 2015.
I like his writing style... I've read all of his series... and enjoyed this one as well. It's not a history text book and is actually a pleasant read.

This one being refered to is new to me, but I like Bernie as an author.

Colin

I think that is the Mark Adkin book from 2001 unless Cornwell's book is published under a different name in North America (nearly typed US then sorry Col). Bernie writes a pretty good narrative account but for narrative history Barbero's "The Battle" is my favourite.

Cheers

Waterloo Companion is Mark Adkin's book I think Colin. I missed Huw's note when I posted.

The 2 best novels I have read from the napoleonic era are
7 men of gascony by RF Delderfield
and The Duellists which was made into a movie by Ridley Scott.

......If you can still get em

Paul

Thanks for the tip about 7 Men. It is still available on Amazon albeit but used copies are much much cheaper than new copies.

The Duellists is by Joseph Conrad and is a short story. I got mine in a anthology of his short stories but have only read the duellists as I'm a cultural heathen!!!!

I'll have to find that one Paul.
(Edit - just looked up on Amazon - expensive 2nd hand but great reviews - thanks for recommending Paul)

For my money the best novels based on the napoleonic period are the Jack Aubrey series by Patrick O'Brien - however these are all based on the Navy. They're fantastic despite me never wanting to model a ship - ever.

The duellists can be downloaded as a pdf online as it's quite short. I assume it's out of copyright now and not illegal to read that way.

Cheers

Hi guys,
Glad you like the idea, funny how you think everyone must have already read what you did !
I don't remember it as a short story it was a red covered paperback.
It wasn't 'Game of Thrones' thickness I admit, but it was
a novel of a couple of hundred pages I'm sure.

Another great book I read before I was 18 was
Tramp in armour.
A novel concerning the exploits of a Matilda tank and it's crew trying to rejoin the BEF outside Dunkirk in 1940.
I remember it as an exciting read.

Mat will you be at the club on Thursday?

Good god I read "Tramp in Armour" too. Another great book was "Covenant with Death" by John Harris.

I have been searching the black hole that is my painting/recording room and damned if I can't find my copy of the Cornwell waterloo book:mad:

I will find it damn it!!!! If I don't, I will feel like I lost my mind :wtf: ... we can't have that, no, we can't :bored:

I will find it!

Colin

Mate ,
just leave it well alone wherever it is.....
you don't need the stress,
you already know who won.
and it's only a Sven Hassel book in a different era.

He ain't worth it mate.

Paul.

Oh Paul, if only it were so easy.

I can't leave it alone... I just can't!

I know I have it! Not being able to find it will drive me stark raving batshit bonkers. Now I also question my memory of the book's title and that will drive me even more stark raving batshit bonkers... I can't afford to get any worse than I am...

Oh book, wherefore art thou? Why have you forsaken me?:arghh:

Ok......
It's behind the thing....
Where you put it to be safe

You know when you put the box down when you had to move that kit?
Well it's under the papers that were at the side of the wrongly labelled box with the bits in.

Usually !

Peehee hee hee

I've been awake since 1.30 after an hours dozing,

It's 4.40 am and someone else should suffer a little.

I should say sorry really.........
