Hi, can anyone recommend any good books on painting especially on flesh and shadows?
I want to be able to follow a step by step guide on different figures as I have a variety of subjects from Indians to nurses, birds and other animals. I'm not much of a millitary person. I prefer using vallejo but have had a go in oils, so dont mind and willing to try anything.

Hello Teresa, ..Most methods of painting are applicable, regardless of the subject, Military or not, the method is the same only the subject is different! a big nasty Viking, or a Nurse! see Patricks review of this book! I have it and it is worth the investment. I am sure that there are Acrylic only manuals kicking about, but I personally like to use all mediums on any one piece, so long as it fits.

I think this is a must have for all figure painters.
It's helpfull en very explaining.

I bought it. Note that this guide rely heavily in oils, which may not suit if you don't like oils (cant stand the smell of mineral spirit) or you have invested heavily in acrylics. Having said that many of the contents will still be relevant and informative even if you don't use oils at all.

Hello Nicola, a great book on figure painting is " The Art of the Flat Tin Figure " by Mike Taylor.
Though out of print, you might pick one up secondhand. I don,t know if you have ever tried flats, but if your focus is not military figures, there are a lot of civilian subjects in flat figures.
Best wishes Gary

Hi Nicola
I have a spare copy of the excellent Daniel Cartaccis book Painting miniatures.I can let you have it for a tenner.
