I'll speak to Günther and we'll make the bases for the box art plain, hopefully that will stop any misunderstandings.
I think you shouldn't change things. I'm also a big fan of Günther Sternberg and I think that he perfectly enhances the figures of your range, also thanks to the groundworks he made. At every new Tommy's war figure that is released I said "wow that's a great figure ... I should paint it " ! And that is an important feeling in my opinion because figure painting (and purchases!) is passion. And as Colin said your box art are very inspiring ! So my point in my first post in that debate is that if the box art only shows "what is in the box" the feeling will not be the same.

Change nothing, Tommy's war range is perfect :)

I would also like to apologise if my first post was offending you.

Hi Steve

Following on from my previous comments re Airfix box tops Darren I think you should stick with the box art bases putting the figures in context. Your red and white boxes and top quality pictures of the finished item really stand out. I find it interesting that this point has been raised over the picket fence with the sailor yet there has been no comment re the RNACS Petty Officer's walls or the earlier Royal Fusiliers railway track! 'tis a strange world indeed.

It's easy to take offence Jon.;)

It seems I made an error in judgement with my timing of this thread and using the Tommys War figure as the trigger for my musing. There is now three pages of posts, the majority of which revolve around one particular figure from one particular manufacturer. It was never my intention to single anyone out. The thread was started just to sound out the feelings of other members with regards to boxart in comparison to contents in general. Sorry Tommys War, keep my mouth shut in future.

Hi Darren,
I have only one thing to say about your Naval figure, well two really, 1st, bloody marvelous and 2nd, do one in 120mm scale. The missus said I could buy one straight away in that scale.
And believe me that is a top quality bit of praise for her and she did not even frown or give me a quizzical look!:wideyed:
cheers
Richie

I say keep doing what you are doing Darren its a great product, great range, period, quality and sculpt and many out there are gratefull for such ... Sure put in a base then, foil and a cigarette but charge more and bring them in line with other 54mm single figure kits.

Can only echo this one.
Darren, keep the price, and the figures and the box as it is.

My opinon.....
We can throw alot of Euro's / Dollars and Pounds away trough the excaust pipe of our car.
Smoke more cigarets/cigars, drinking more. And then complaning about a figure without a base that is mostly ended in the bin......And they charge you 12 Pound for that:LOL::LOL:
Come on guys, drink two beers less, take the bicycle for the two miles instead of the car, and stop smoking. See how many figures you can buy on a yearly base.

Hmmmm - I guess that nearly everything is said about the nice presentation of Tommy`s War-Miniatures and because the thread was raised as a more general discussion about misleading presentations of new miniatures I would like to comment on that.
When modelling was mainly a hobby for kids I was (in the seventies while being one of these kids) many times impressed by the nice painted Airfix boxarts but even then never expected that the scenery of the boxart would be a part of the model inside. When I finally as a youth came across Tamiya kits I hoped that the models (speaking of figures) inside the box would at least be closer to the brilliant boxart and had to face some disappointments but got over it as well. Today the new releases presented in this forum in the majority are no longer aimed at kids as customers and so here we are: old kids that still hang on to the hobby that have gained years of experience and we can check for new releases nearly every day. These releases usually display a standard of quality and variety we would never have dreamed of while we were kids back then. And now a base that is not included or a missing piece of rod for a cigarette is a problem???? Give me a break!
All the best and HAPPY MODELLING!
Martin

I can't see what all the fuss is about to be honest.

If it's a problem to some people, just carry on as now and add a "base (and/or weapon sling) not included" disclaimer to the box. It ain't rocket science.

Remember those crappy Airfix boxes from the '80s when you had a boring photo of a boringly-painted OOB aircraft model parked on a generic blueprint? They were about as inspiring as sitting in the shallows of the River Humber on a cold and drizzly November morning eating lard sandwiches. Almost enough to put you off modelling for life.

The evocative Airfix box art of the '70s by Roy Cross on the other hand - which often depicted in the artwork all manner of stuff not included with the kit - really fired up the imagination and inspired the modeller to part with the folding. And I don'recall that ever being a problem.

If it ain't broken why fix it?

Hi Guys

Just to hopefully tidy up this thread now the dust has settled.

Ken, please keep posting, I think you were right to make the point and I actually agree with you in many ways. It wasn't the general point that was being made in the thread as a whole that I disagreed with, it was the way the thread was moving and the way it read that I felt I had to respond to.

I was aware of the points regarding box art, and was already making changes when I read this thread, so completely understand where its coming from, but just to reiterate, any misunderstanding with box art is down to me being naive rather than any attempt to deliberately mislead anyone.

When I originally set-up the packaging, I did consider that I should put a load of disclaimers on there, but thought (incorrectly in hindsight) that people would realise that for £12 they wouldn't be getting the base. I wanted to set a price point that meant customers can keep-up with the releases, and of course for that price I can't include anything. In the 18 months Tommy's has traded I have refunded one person who claimed that the rifle slings weren't included and two who thought the figure was supplied painted.

Anyway, that's history now, and plans were underway to make some changes, these are:

1. I am photographing all the supplied parts. The boxes will be changed so that instead of the rear of the figure being shown on the reverse the photograph of the unpainted, unassembled parts with a list of what is and what isn't included. I'll make sure that these are included in any of the internet listings and on the website.
2. Photo-etch rifle straps will be included in kits from Euro Militaire onwards, this is of course a huge investment on my part. I won't at this point be raising the price.

Just to answer some of the other points:

1. Mike, Tommy's War will remain at 54mm. The aim of the range is to offer a comprehensive study of World War One, if I make larger figures I simply won't get the coverage, in addition I won't be able to do some of the other exciting things that I've got planned. I understand it is frustrating from your point of view, but there are plenty of other figure companies offering larger size WW1 figures, and with the centenary coming in a couple of years, there will be plenty more to come. I don't get many comments asking for larger figures and, indeed, most people seem happy with the size as they are.

2. I'm constantly asked to produce figures from other countries, at the moment Tommy's War is based on the British and Empire army. That's not to say that I won't consider anything else, but there is so much ground to cover just with the British that it will be some time before I consider anything else, the plan is in place for Tommy's War for 2013 and for 2014 I'm planning to cover the Gallipoli campaign with all six releases.

3. For those customers that have contacted me worried that I am considering not continuing with the range, don't worry, Tommy's War will continue. Figures TW54011 (Naik, Garhwal Rifles 1914) and TW54012 (Corporal, London Scottish, Messines 1914) are cast, Günther is working his magic at the moment and they will be ready for Euro Militaire. There will be a special release later this year (if I can get it ready, then it will be at Scale Model World in Telford in November). In my opinion The Naik is the best figure in the Tommy's War range so far, the special release really is amazing and is going to raise a few eyebrows. The figures for 2013 are set in place, figures TW54013 and TW54014 are looking really great and I am hoping to release the first cavalry figure.

So, the range moves forward, I am listening but unfortunately I can't please everyone but I do my best to create something that modellers can enjoy.

Finally, thank you to everyone that PM'd and emailed me support, I wasn't upset by any of the thread but felt I had to step in, but thanks for the support guys, it really is appreciated.

Kind regards

Darren
Tommy's War

Once again Darren, I have to apologise for the fact that you got a lot of flack as a result of my thread. It was never aimed at you but to the hobby in general and it is a shame that some jumped on you as a result. I generally don't buy 54mm now because eyes ain't what they used to be but I do comment on all scales of figures presented on here and have never given anything but good praise for your figures. It is unfortunate that some threads start off as meaningful discussions end up hammering some poor innocent. Keep up the good work and if I ever decide to do a 54mm again it will be one of yours.

Tommy's War will continue. Figures TW54011 (Naik, Garhwal Rifles 1914) and TW54012 (Corporal, London Scottish, Messines 1914) are cast [...] I am hoping to release the first cavalry figure
 Thanks for the information ! It's funny because yesterday I was surfing on your website and asking me what will be the future release !
