Dear Brian,

Well done on an outstanding figure. As you already know I really like your style and approach to figure painting - I think you have developed your own style but more importantly you seem to take the 'complicated' out of figure painting. On another front (unlike a lot of figure painters) you are prepared to share openly how you do things. You are a gentleman.

Well done lad
Franco

Hi Brain, super work, really. The metals are unbelievably. The face is full of life. Respect.

Another wonderful figure from you, cant wait to see it in the flesh. It just gets better with every figure.
Derek dont worry about the flags, its easy for the Supersnad, but I am sure he will never do another one.
Great stuff Brian

Hi Jason
I undercoated the banner with Humbrol 93 and Humbrol Flesh and when dry i applied Rowney's Madder Brown and brushed it off until i was left with a thin coat of oil i used naples yellow for the highlights and lamp black for the shading.
Brian
I've an apology to make. When Jason asked me how i painted the red banner on my figure i said that i undercoated with Humbrol 93 and flesh when it should have been Humbrol 73!!!! which is a red wine type colour.

It was brought to my attention by a friend of mine, who would probably make a good editor ,if he wasn't so old ,and if he started working again ,instead of living in the lap of luxury. He knows who he is!
Sorry about my error, but as they say "to err is human to forgive is divine" and whoever said that was talking a load of B.S.

Brian:

Thanks mate. Tried your technique on the Pegaso Tuscan knight (54-084) yesterday and it worked like a charm. Sorry for beating a dead horse but looking at your figure there seems to be more of a gold patina from some of the metals, especially on the helmet. Just wondering if it the photography or is it due to a higher portion of burnt umber in the mix or is there a gold ochre in there too?

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul
Glad to here the method i used was of help to you.I've taken a couple of closer shots, i reckon it's down to the high content of burnt umber especially on the helmet,as i used less burnt umber on the scale armour to get a different tone. You can stipple the surface of the skin of oils you have left after using the paper towel to get a patina effect but it's up to you as i've used both in the past.
I don't really have a hard and fast way to do armour as i like experimenting so i don't get too bored doing the same old thing.I'm pleased the way this armour turned out.I've included a figure i did some time ago,but left the armour smoother,so you can see the difference.
P.S. Must remember and do something with that hole at the top of the helmet as i don't fancy the plume much.
Brian

Brian, really wonderful paint work on the whole figure but especially the banner.

I`m curious on how you got such a smooth, deep, and clean design ?

In my limited experiences, modern oils are so translucent, even the Cadmiums, that especially yellow over red/red over yellow, are very difficult to achive good coverage without heavy paint build-up from several applications.

How do you get it to work so well ?

Thanks

Brian,

You have done a masterful job, your painting style is great and to my eyes gives your mini a real life look. For a newbie like me, I hope that i can work towards such a high level of painting one day- thanks for the tips you provide.

Thanks for your kind comments .Regards painting yellow over red is straightforward as long as you use the right oils.Once i had painted the red banner i thinnly oulined the cross in humbrol 93 and then applied a thin second coat.I used yellow ochre oils and highlighted with naples yellow and shaded with a touch of raw umber. This will give you really good covering power and one coat of oils should be enough. The powerful reds you can use are Mars red,Madder brown. You'll soon learn what oils are opaque, hope this helps.
