Afternoon all.

A couple of sessions rolled into one today. I started yesterday by sorting out a base and roughly positioning the figure to assess how much I needed to build up to support his right leg. Not decided yet what I'll pose it on - maybe a low stone wall. That's for another session.
I then primed the body/legs and started by painting his armour. He is wearing a cuirass and lamellar thigh plates, very much in the style of Reiter armour, popular with horsemen of the era. I painted it in a blued steel finish, again popular, but expensive compared to the standard stuff. I'm suggesting he "acquired" this posh set on the battlefield from a fallen rider. To back that up, there is a large round hole in the left breast of the cuirass, which might be what felled its previous owner. Not all armour of the time was shot-proofed.
Continuing the colour theme of the hat (see above), I decided to paint the breeches in a faded red with blue slashing.
Today's session saw the highlights and shading put in on the breeches, and the odd details dealt with, eg. the various straps and buckles, cod-piece (cuir-bouilli) and purse, plus the waist sash. I test-fitted the cloak again - now there's paint on it, the fit is snug to say the least. Here's a couple of dodgyvision shots of progress:

Tomorrow I'll deal with his lower legs and maybe decide on a colour for his shirt. Thanks for looking in(y)

Hi Phil, that looks great. Really like your work on the face - loads of character. It’s not a subject I’ve tried myself but I’m looking forward to seeing it progress. Thanks for describing you paint mixes too. I’ve got lots to learn so things like that sort of thing is always interesting for me.

Afternoon everyone

Firstly, many thanks gents for your encouraging comments on yesterday's efforts. I much appreciate your interest.

OK, this afternoon's session involved finishing the lower legs. I toyed with the idea of giving the man vertical striped hose but I decided it might start looking overdone, so I settled for a plain linen colour. As they are depicted with a rear seam, they could have been linen, or wool fabric. Based on the small, tight wrinkles I opted for linen. The base colour was mainly Vallejo Buff, with touches of Light Grey and Off White, which gives a nice yellowish grey. This was highlighted with more White in the base mix, and shadows achieved by adding Green Ochre and more Grey to the base.
Next, I painted the garter ribbons, deciding on a lighter blue as a nice contrast to the slashing. This was a simple mix of Vallejo Andrea Blue and Off White, highlighted with more white and shaded with more blue. I used a light wash of Vallejo Game Wash Dark Blue to enhance the contrast.

Final job was the shoes, the nick-name for which I think is "cow-mouth", due to their blunt shape. They would have been made of tanned leather, probably ox-hide, so a "leather" colour was mixed using a base of Vallejo Chocolate Brown with Cavalry Brown and Light Brown touches. I used glazes of Cork Brown and English Uniform to bring out the contrasts, and a final wash of Citadel Agrax Earthshade . Lastly a brush coat of diluted Vallejo Air Satin varnish added a slight sheen. End of today's session looks thus:

Next session I will sort out the arms. Thanks for looking in(y)

Hi all
Again, two sessions in one post today. I spent some time yesterday making up the groundwork on the base, and opted for a rocky scene, which was constructed using grey Miliput and various items of greenery. I tend to make left-over Miliput into various sized pebbles, rocks and boulders which then go in a box for future projects. The rocks on this base were such, and I found one just the right height to balance our man's right leg. While the base was curing I underpainted the cloak , and that completed yesterday's bench work.
Today I painted the inside of the cloak using a mix of Vallejo Chocolate Brown and Brown Pink, and when dry I fitted it to the body. I had relieved the tight spots from the last attempt at fitting it, and this time it clicked into place nicely, secured with a spot of Cyano-glue.
I wanted the outside of the cloak to look a rusty red colour so a mix of Vallejo Amaranth and English Uniform was brushed on, and shaded with Chocolate Brown added in the base mix and highlighted with Amaranth/Brown Pink. The fur cape was painted with a mix of Vallejo Buff, Flat Earth and Saddle Brown. Citadel Agrax Earthshade was washed into the fur and when dry, I highlighted it with a dry-brushing of Brown Pink. Still some tidying to do but here it is at the moment:

I reckon tomorrow's session will see our man virtually done so I may do one more post on this thread, or if it goes well, I'll put it on the completed thread.
Thanks for looking in(y)

Afternoon all.

I've just squeezed one more session on to this WIP, which involved painting and fitting the right arm, and also the short sword (known as a "katzbalger" - not sure why, but it sounds unpleasant if you are a cat!). This was a short, broad bladed sword for close in work and was often worn horizontally in combat. It was characterised by the figure-of-eight handguard and often had a stag-horn grip. If you couldn't keep 'em off with the "zweihander", then the "katzbalger" would come into play. I fixed this item with a short brass pin as it sits in an awkward place.
I added some small spots of dried blood to our man's shirt sleeves, not a lot, but I judged that he would find it hard to keep a clean shirt in battle. I then offered the figure up to the groundwork to check the fit. I found it necessary to relieve some of the base rocks to ensure the large sword nestled nicely. That will be fitted, along with the head, and some weathering, tomorrow. Here's progress so far:

I might re-do his shoes before I fix him to the base, as there isn't sufficient contrast between them and the groundwork.
So, I'm calling that it on this WIP and tomorrow's post will (hopefully) be on "Completed Figures". Check it out there(y)
