A fine figure from Maurice, personally hope to see a Chasseur d'Afrique in this scale some day.

Hey Johan, how come you didnt like this figure when Maurice posted it on Sculpting? You and Grumbling moaner sayed the Metal Models figure was much better. You also mentioned a mistake in the cape...........Funny how things change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No offence meant, Just constructive critisism (Your Words)

Think this is superb, have asked Graham to have one for me at Sword and Lance, so with luck!!!!

No problem Don ! (y)

... finally, if I'm allowed, I'd like to add something on a lighter note :

Poirot_hatches.jpg

Actually he's from South-African Lithuanian Russian etc descent I understand, but whatever : David Suchet is CLASS. Poirot is the best series the BBC ever released on mankind (y)

And heartfelt thanks to Ole Agatha for making Poirot a fellow countryman of mine :) and making clear that there's a difference between French and Belgians.

OK, back to Zouaves :

I guess this figure also accurately portraits a Zouave from the Italian Wars of 1859, an important period in history MUCH neglected by figure manufacturors. If I bought one, I'd personally display it as a Zouave at the battle of Solferino or Magenta, really.
There were American "observers" in the French army in Italy, and they noticed the Zouaves because they were capable soldiers and had exotic uniforms, and brought back stories of Zouaves to the USA ; Zouaves were the talk of the town after 1859, the fashion to follow in military circles, and that is why 2 years later in the armies of the ACW you'll find quite a few units who had their own particular Zouave uniforms. I think some New York regiment had a uniform virtually identical to this one.
But, as I said, the Americans learned about Zouaves at Solferino and Magenta.

Hope that is a useful historical note which shows the scope of this figure.

Thank you Johan very much, I also looked at my Franco Prussian references, Osprey French Imperial Troops 1870-71, and with some minor alterations and rifle change it could also cover that period so as you said there is a wide scope.

Thanks again, I really appreciate any historical information.

Very best wishes
Gra

Cracking Piece Gra!

This will look a million dollars when hes painted!

I like the flamboyancy of the Zouave regiments! As some of you know I have made a few over the years most of which were ACW I must admit.
But great uniforms with loads of character for the sculptor to get they're teeth into! Then colours, Fantastic!

Carl
