leather
british red cloth
french hussar green

Norm,

These are the mixes I use for the applications you are looking for. All the colours are Vallejo Model acrylics. Didn't know if you wanted black or brown leather and if brown, how dark.

Can't give exact ratios, I just kind of eyeball it.
Hope these help:

British Red

Base- 908 Carmine Red + 984 Matt Brown
Highlights- Base + 908 Carmine + 953 Matt Yellow + 845 Sunny Skin Tone
Shadow- Base + 926 Red + 950 Black

French Hussar Green (Chasseur Green)- adjust tone to suit

Base- 970 Deep Green + 875 Biege Brown + 950 Black
Highlights- Base + 970 Deep Green + 955 Matt Flesh
Shadow- Base + 950 Black

Black Leather

Base- 950 Black + 989 Sky Grey + 921 English Uniform
Highlights- Base + 989 Sky Grey + 921 English Uniform (the more 921 you use the older the leather looks)
Shadow- Base + 950 Black

Brown Leather

Base- 941 Burnt Umber
Highlights- Base + 845 Sunny Skin Tone + 929 Light Brown + 851 Orange (the more 851 the older the leather looks)
Shadow- Base + 950 Black

I have other Brown Leather mixes documented, let me know exactly what you need.

Cheers

Colin

thanks colin very much your triad combos worked very well so much easier for the acrylic novice.
a few others i was curious about were
reddish leather
gold
silver
iron
bronze
and the dreaded white linen and black cloth
if anyone wishes to add triad requests of any nature please feel free

Red leather. German Orange(any orange)base, glazed with leather belt. Last highlight add a touch of either Iraqi Sand or white. The metals I tend to shade with burnt umber and black oils, in various amounts. Black, Panzer black shaded with pure black. Linen. Warm, touch of English Uniform in to Ivory/white going up to pure white. Cold white, Dark grey. Tough of black in the deepest shadows, up to pure white again.
Hope that helps,
Carl.(y)

There is a really good thread dealing with Bronze in the 'Painting Forum'.

All Ratios are by eye again.
Hope these work for you.

fantastic info here. thank you fellows. so helpful indeed.
how about a non mettalic approach?
there are times representing metals are needed. Im thinking flats and subminiature items

Any suggestions on "sky blue"?

I have a couple of light blues, how light do you need?

Try:

Base- 906 Palee Blue + 989 Sky Grey
Highs- Base + 820 Off White or 950 White
Shadow- Base + a touch of 950 Black

If thats too light, try:

Base- 844 Deep Sky Blue + 965 Prussian Blue
Highs- Base + 844 + 951 White
Shadow- Base + 965 + a touch of 950 Black

Eyeball the ratios to suit

Hope this is what you were looking for

Colin,i have a bunch of miniatures on my workbench, working on the Gatinais regiment at the battle of Yorktown.
Their uniforms are white facing with violet, which i think i am doing a good job with it,but always welcome suggestions.
But my question regarding sky blue is because i have bought a French carabinier 1791 from Art girona, but i want to convert him in a grenadier in white coat and sky blue facings,i have an idea of the mix,but i would like to hear from a pro. (y)

Daniel,

Sounds like some cool projects, don't forget to post them as you go.

As far as being a pro... that ain't me!!! Alot of my mixes came from a book from Pegaso, Advanced Figure Modelling. Great book with awesome SBS articles.

I just took the mixes they used and tweeked some of them and used some as is. Studying their mixes gave me an idea of how to get to a colour I need and how to shade and highlight them. Still learning everytime I try a mix... some attempts were brutal, others worked first try.

Anytime I can help someone else...

Colin
