Nice work, may I suggest a little less brow and cheek definition? The brow looks like it's getting neanderthal! At the moment it doesn't look like the guy in the photo. I'd widen the shoulders a tiny bit too. Detail is excellent.

The problem with sculpting from photograph is that whatever comes out is compared to photograph. How much feedback are you after at this stage before completion?

Good effort, there are few places that have been smudged (although I realised its not finished yet) and need correction before commiting to mould, like third medal, sleaves are begging for more folds too. The area of tunic under L arm around stick may need a bit of attention.
Notice how fabric on picture behaves under rigid embroided sleeve badge - Nap posted pictures of it earlier - it looks stiff as a board.

There is a definite progress compared to first attempt.

The brow is too heavy regardless of the photo, you can actually see the bloke hasn't got a heavy brow. People don't have heavy brows like that.

What also I see is the cheeks are so pronounced on the sculpt that he looks more slavic than north european british, combined with the brow it enhances this. Also the subject is not as squat as the sculpt, the gentleman appears rather tall and more elegant, the body language suggests this. For it to look like the photo you must get rid of brow! Much softer features, extend shoulders a bit too, they are a little on the narrow side, refer to relative proportions on a canon so helps

I think its rather good. A bust does not have to be identical to the subject to be a valid portait. Rremember this is but one photo and lots of people look different in different photos. I don't agree with zodiac's fixation on the brow and his rather sweeping comments.

No, with respect Colin, there is no way the man in the sculpt could be seen as the man in portrait, that is all i haf to say. i mean to give no offence.

That's OK - you are entitled to your opinioin. I just think you were too firm on your brow comments. I have seen some people who look like that. I have a bit of a heavy brow myself. :)

I too would suggest that the main feature that needs refining to lock in the likeness would be to lighten the brow line. He appears to be pensively frowning a bit much when compared to the photo, and both shaving back and raising the brow just a bit will correct this.

Sgt. Edwards' nose is longer and comes to a slightly hawkish point, whereas your sculpt shows a bit broader, shorter and more bulbous variety. The face needs to be lengthened mid nose to keep it proportionate.

Hi Guys ,

I have the original version , its a great subject and will be popular , in respect the comments , Jim will I am sure welcome the constructive comments raised by members and revist the area's memntioned ..

This has been a hard slog for him as this is the 2nd version which is never easy ..I for one will be seeing this tonight (coffee and biccies please Jim!!!) and will certainly be painting this new version of SME

A lot of much detailed work has gone on with I have no doubt a lot of muttering !!!!

I totally agree about the thread going bizzare lets stop this now guys and keep posts to the subject matter ...constructive posts .

Jesus, yet again 2 pages of non-constructive cock-fencing and butthurt.
Can admin please delete anything that isnt relevant to the sculpt - none of it is usefull to Jimbo. Zodiac's early posts are actually reasonably constructive and there was a specific reason why I asked how much feedback Jimbo wants.

(I am very tempted to ask about the origin of common eastern european name like Kelvin Andrews, but should refrain).

Colin (CRF), I will have to disagree- a real persona from a definitive photograph requires a certain degree of likeness, otherwise you cant attribute a name to it. Imagine your wedding picture being drawn in oils by me, although your face looks more like your uncle's because I didnt quite catch it, but it still represents Colin - so will be fine - would you accept that?
There is 2 pictures known to me and one drawing of Major Edwards so there is scope if bringing likeness closer.

It is also a commercial work - I may be old fashioned, but that puts the bar a little higher than usual for me.

To put this thread back on track, here are a few of the changes I would make, illustrated by messing with it via photoshop for a few minutes. Still not refined enough to be a perfect likeness, but I think you can see that it will put you closer to being in the ball park:

Looking at this with Mikes photoshop , looks better , the shoulders need revisiting as well perhaps Mike can use PS on this area .

I for one would be very interested how Jim feels after all the constructive comments and indeed if its possible to change these area's (I am no sculptor as many well know!!!)

Still a fab subject .
