Hey Joe, a very well painted figure. I would have ask you about the figure but since you have already mentioned it, maybe you can share with me how you paint the barrels.

regards :)

Guys,

Thanks very much for the kind words. I really appreciate them. Leigh I did not win a gold for this one it was for my highlander bust.

Wong,

I painted the barrels as my usual way, really simple! I based coated them in acrylic sunny skin tone and then took burnt umber and brown madder oils and painted it on them and then wiped most of the paint off. I then cooked/crock pot the barrels and when they were dry I lightly drybrushed them with a few shades of acrylic ochre's. I then took burnt umber and black acrylics and painted in the shadows between the slats and around all the bands. The bands/cords are just different shades of brown and ochres.

I hope this helps.

Joe

I gotta say when I saw these pictures posted last week I was very impressed........but seeing this figure up close Saturday was truly inspiring....I took many pictures of your work Joe......beautiful painting.

Guy,

Thanks for the kind words. I hope one day to take a few better pictures. I also thought that your work was much better in the round than the pictures. Keep up the good work and thanks for my little goodies. ;)

Joe

Thanks Joe. Just one more question, any reason why you use both oil and acrylic on the same thing?

regards :)

Hey Wong,

No problem, ask away! :) The reason for using both is that I was not really happy with just the look of the oils and I wanted to deepen the look. I also did the same thing on the ship's deck on both this figure and the Creole. I went back in an used a darker acrylic for some of the shadow areas. I hope this helps and if not let me know and I will try to answer any other questions.

Joe

Hi Joe,
Great work, I'm in working on the Marine as we speak. In regards to your comments on using Acrylics over Oils for some of your deepest shadow, are you having the same problem I'm having of the oil color base reppeling the Acrylics?
Thanks,
SS

Hey SS,

Thanks for the kind words. I have had some problems in the past with the acrylics repelling off of the oils. What I did to help it is to make sure that there is little water in the brush. Another thing to help is to airbrush an acrylics flat coat onto the piece and then go at it.

Thanks for the sites. Which version are you going to paint? I like the one with the red lapels.

Joe

Joe,
Thanks for your reply. I'll be painting the Cap. Mullan's (Red Lapels), I like the red, green and white. For the ground work, I found a 54mm HMS battleship deck section, which I'll be using; it's a Verlinden piece.
