This is my latest figure study. It depicts a Continental soldier wearing a hunting shirt. The painting is 11 X 14 and done in acrylics.~Gary

Hi Gary..great to see some more of your work.
That's a very attractive painting, and would make a great design for a figure. I love the super soft transitions of the light and shade, beautiful work...and that's 'some' weapon..!!

All the best...Roy.

Your Continential Infantryman

Gary, Dang, you just keep improving! I really like the piece and hope that it inspires you to do it in miniature. I would love to paint it!

Hey Gary,
I did not know you too were a drawer. Nice painting, I like the figure and the subject.
I think he did not have problems of hunger, isn't true?
Cheers

Nice work Gary!!! are you looking at getting your work published at all?
Leigh

Thanks Leigh, great to see you on here (where's your stuff?). I'd be humbled to see my stuff in print. If I were to be approached by a historian who would like to write an article or book it would be something I'd consider. At the moment it's not the type of thing I'm actively persuing though. Currently my focus is on getting a better handle on the (acrylic) medium.

Marcello, Thank you. You bring up an interesting point. I guess my soldier does have that healthy look. The diets of soldiers during that time were far from normal most of the time.

Nice work Gary. Getting 2-D to look that good is a whole nother thing from figs. Are you planning to do more figure studies? Do you take requests for your next study? :D

Marc,Terry, Roy,Taesung, Maurizio, & John, Thanks for the kind works. I'm still trying to develope a style that really compliments historical subjects.

Wendy, Thanks. It does take a little doing to make something flat round. Careful placement of shadows and highlights are really important here. I do plan on doing several more figure studies in addition to some with multiple figures. As for subject matter I typically choose from a number of sketches I already have on hand. I also like to alternate between periods. I plan on also doing some landscape pieces with historical structures pictured in them.

Hello Gary,

I don't have much to add to what has been said but I particularly appreciate the authentic way you depict the balance of the musket (position of the hand and angle of the weapon). Sculptors, take note!
