Continental Line Infantry

Continental Line Infantry, circa 1780-81. A very nice bust from Ellie’s Miniatures, sculpted by Carl Reid. This bust was painted representing the small detachment of Continentals who fought in Morgan’s Flying Army at the Battle of Cowpens in western South Carolina, January 17, 1781.

I painted this piece in preparation for the Artist Preservation Group Inc,’s exhibition at the Museum of the American Revolution next summer.

I used three basic colors for the cross-belts, shown in the photo below. I started with a solid coat of Vallejo Panzer Aces Light Mud, and then dirtied it up with thin streaks of Panzer Aces German Panzer Black Highlights. Then, using my worst old brush, I dry brushed streaks of the Reaper Leather White across the surface.

For the brown leather belts and straps, I started with a base coat of Panzer Aces Leather Belt. I dirtied this up with thin blotchy coats of German Black Brown and Burnt Umber. I then added the scuffs and scratches with the Reaper Shield Brown and then high highlights with the Old Wood I finished it with a thin scratchy coat of satin varnish

Superb painting all round there. The only thing I don't like about this otherwise lovely bust (and that held me back from buying it) is the moustache, which doesn't really fit with that period.

I understand what you're saying about the mustache. I considered replacing the head, or carving away the lower portions of it before deciding to keep it. It’s a great sculpt overall, and I would recommend it

You’re definitely right about those two new busts from Sabot. I wish they were larger scale (200mm), but they are quite nice.
