Hi All

I am currently modelling a British soldier bust where he is smoking a pipe. I have used some putty to create the tobacco contents.

Has anyone previously painted the contents of a pipe to make it look like it's burning?, Or have any suggestions or can point me to any links?

I look forward to any help.

Thanks

Mark

As an (ex) pipe smoker, I can say that most of the time the contents, even though burning well, just look black , with light grey ash on top. You have to suck pretty hard to get it to glow.

As a pipe smoker I can only confirm what Tony writes. As a matter of fact there's a pipe dangling form the corner of my mouth right now.

Hardly any smoke rising from the bowl either. The only visible smoke are the small clouds that come from my mouth when I draw and puff. Its not like a burning cigarette where smoke rises from the tip a the cigarette slowly burns away. If you stop sucking the pipe goes out.

Maybe a few cotton strands placed in the bowl would look convincing. I remember Shep Paine doing that to a cigarette in one of his Monogram dioramas.

Hi everyone, thanks for your thoughts and suggestions and it's confirmed what I was thinking as I've never smoked myself.

It will be a case of experimentation I'm thinking.

Thanks

Mark
