Hi everybody,

Yesterday, I started reading H.P. Lovecraft's Myth Of Cthulhu, which i never read (shame on me, I know...). I was looking for pics of the beast when I came across 3Demonic sculpts, particularly this bust which I found really cool. I gave it a thought for one minute, then went to Detour Studios' website, distributors of the bust. Unfortunately, being almost 50 cm high and in resin, transport costs would add to the already pricey model (in my opinon, though). I was amazed by the representation of the creature and fueled by Metallica's excellent "The Call Of Cthulhu", I started sculpting my own sample, much modest in size (9 cm high without the working base). Anyway, here are some pics :)

Of course, every design credits go to the fellas at www.3Demonic.com, my only inspiration and reference ;)
Sculpting and texture techniques come from Smellybug's excellent tutorial :)

Cheers!

Patrick

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

Hey that's neat. Lovecraft's monsters/beast are far out there. A friend of mine wrote quite a few scenarios for the company that produced the role playing game a few years back. That should be fun to paint for sure.~Gary

Ah, the great Cthulhu himself, maybe laying in his wet grave in R`lyeh! I LOVE and AMDIRE Lovecrafts work, his timeless tales of fear and horror! And his neverending inspiration for fantastic creatures!

Your Bust looks very good so far! I have always thinking to myself how I can handle Cthulhu and his horde of Monsters. There is a lot of inspired work outthere (I remember a vinylkit with arms, legs and wings) and I will surely began sculpting something Lovecraftian!

Go on and show more! How will the tentacled fellow be painted???

I don't mean to sound simple, but not knowing Cthulhu from a hole in the ground, I thought this was Davey Jones from the new Pirates of the Carribean film.

Nice sculpt though. Are those BB's used for the eyes?

A+

Matt, one can say that the Davey Jones Design is taken in a big way from early Cthulhu Drawings, used as Paperback Covers from Mags like WEIRD TALES and others

That would make for a great conversion if this got released commercially. He is an ugly cus :(

hi guys,

thanks for you comments!

Jay: Basically, this bust would be just for me, for I suppose there would be quite a lot copyright issues rising, since 1) I do not own the rights for Cthulhu and 2) i litterally copied the design from an existing design by another studio / sculptor...

Frank: I don't know how it came to me, I never decided so quickly on a subjet before. Maybe it's the evil powers of the Creature?
It will be painted in tones of olive green but with shades of skintone showing through... as i said earlier, my main inspiration is the sculpt from 3Demonic, so i suggest you go there and check their work ^_^

Matt: that's no problem: I didn't know much about cthulhu myself, only for a few pictures I saw a while ago...
I had to find something suitable for the eyes but hadn't anything better than these bolts from which I cut the dome part:

Bruno: Merci beaucoup! Bah selon l'endroit où tu es en France, c'est ptêt pas si loin? Enfin, j'espère te croiser sur un concours un de ces jours ;)

Matthew: You know, i got quite an unusual amount of feedback requesting commercial release of this bust, but, as I said, it may case some trouble with the copyrighting...

Cheers, y'all :)

Hi Patrick
compliments appeals to me this realization .... even if the scale to be the much smaller yield me seems the much good..... The Putty what to be Super sculpey?

Salutes MAB ;)

Hey Maurizio,

I'd say the scale is about 1/6 considering the 3demonic version being 50cm high and at 1/1. Yet, in the book it states that the creature is a few kilometers high so it's a bit confusing...

I'm using Fimo, which is kinda our alternative here for Sculpey :)

Very nice work Patrick...you have some great textures and some good looking sinister movement in those weird tentacles...

Really look forward to seeing it painted..!!

All the best...Roy.

Excellent bust my friend.Metallica's song is really great(I used to collect everything from them!I wish I was able to sculp Cliff)
Keep up

Hi,

it looks great. Do you have any plans for full body sculpts of Cthulhu figures?

By the way, frothers united uk has a miniature (i.e. 28mm) sculpting competition going on which is somewhat related to Cthulhu. Details are over here if you are interested.

Bye, Ming-Hua

The whole Cthulhu Universe is full of fantastic ideas of Monsters and Mayhem! I have some strage looking Artworks which cry out to be sculpted! I hope, I can post something of that stuff in the near future in my workbench.

I love reading Lovecraft and other tales based on his ideas. Thats all very inspirational!!

Patrick,
coming along VERY nicely. Keep us posted, if you as you say this isn't finished yet, I can't wait to see it done!
