Hi all. I've been giving this project some serious thought over the past couple of weeks as its very important to me that I get it right. Before I can give the figures any attention I felt I needed to get a good idea of what the base would be like. I'm referring to the base as the 'set' from now on as that is really what it is, with the figure of Kate ter Horst playing centre stage with a supporting cast of wounded soldiers and medics. I'm unsure at this time if I should include any of Kate's children in this piece?

As the Ter Horst house was actually the old vicarage next door to the Oosterbeek church (sometimes known as Lonsdale Church), and Kate would read passages from the bible to wounded and dying soldiers, I wanted to capture some of this in the sculpt without it being a notably religious piece. So I've designed the 'set' as a series of three arches; one for the back wall of the cellar steps, one for the cellar wall and one for the floor. I hope the arch reflects the doors and windows of the church whilst still giving me the elements of a cellar. Anyhow, click on the image if you want to see a larger version and watch this space for the next 'installment'. Cheers. Matt

Hey Matt!

Always good to see what you're up to! This looks an absolute corker! Love the concept sketches (probably the most fun part don't you think?). Have you got the book 'Cloud Over Arnhem' by Kate Ter Horst?

Is it possible you could post some stills from the film? (I've never seen it...definitely on my 'to do' list!).

I had a good look at a EG cast version of your Chindit figure that a chap bought along to the Gravesham club meet....and I was very, very impressed! (Hope you sold the master for what it was worth!).

Cheers,
Jon.

Hi Jon

I do enjoy the concept part of things, I find it the only way for me to really 'get into it' otherwise I'd probably loose interest half way through, as well as probably forgetting to do something important!

Yes, I picked up a copy of her book from the Hartenstein in September, its an excellent account.

I'm not sure about posting stills from the film. I tried to take some grabs the other day for reference but it didn't work. I'm not too sure about copyright either?

Thanks for you kind words re the Chindit, I was happy with it for my first venture into commercial sculpting and can't wait to do another!

Matt
