From time to time I get an idea and wonder whether I can do it. In this case is is to sculpt a bust of a downed pilot in the sea.

Not sure how this is going to pan out, but here goes.

Here is a photo of the initial sculpting - the head out of Magicsculpt with the torso and sea out of Milliput;

Next is to add some paint

Hi Peter

That's a interesting concept and idea , I have seen soldiers wading through water in busts but not a downed pilot

Look forward to seeing the paint apoear especially how your going to do the sea

Thanks for sharing

Hi Nap

I's also interested to see how I do the sea!! i sort of have an idea but I have never tried anything like this before.

Hi Peter
I did something similar on a figure base recently (Nelson). Sculpted in Miliput. Painted in acrylics and then added several layers of gloss medium (I think you can get a special water effect one, but I used some artist stuff I had laying around) Top layer had a little bit of white acrylic added for a foam effect. Barnacles were added with tank turret texture grains mixed with glue and sculpted with a pin.
Bit tired now after a long days driving, but feel free to ask questions and I can take some better photos if needed (This ones a cropped area of a larger picture
Cheers

Paul - thank for the advice, I am thinking along similar lines, but using transparent silicon.

Very interesting subject and aproach.Would love to see more of where this takes you.

Oda.

Interesting and novel.

Re the water: if you extended the main fig a little (the first few inches 'under water') you could perhaps make a latex mould from the sculpted sea then cast it in clear resin with a hint of green, so the fig sits in it?

Not sure how clear that is, but I know it could work (I can do a sketch).

Neil - nice idea about clear resin. Perhaps if i repeat the idea I can give it a go.

Oda - welcome on the journey

This afternoon I worked on the face, changing my technique from oil on acrylic to just acrylics. This evening it the flying helmet.

Here he is with the flying helmet painted, again using Vallejo acrylics:

There is no shying away from it, despite spending a lot of the weekend weeding the garden I started to tackle the sea. The partI am least confident with, so this is very much an experiment.

The first step was to use Vallejo paints, applying various shades of blue to form the base coat of theses.

Step two, again with Vallejo was to add white to the tops of the waves and ripples.

Not very effective, so I applied a layer of transparent silicon sealant - the stuff you buy from DIY shopd in tubes, used in kitchens and bathrooms.

Tomorrow more white needs to be added.

(Slight error - photos 2 and 3 are in the wrong order)

It rained today so no time in the garden, but more at the bench - every cloud has a silver lining, even rainclouds!!

Here is the final stage. i continued the use of DIY products, using white silicon sealant to create the 'froth' in the tops of the waves and around the pilot.

I'm not sure if this technique really worked, but since the project was meant to be a quick and fun challenge I am reasonably content with the results. If I were to revisit this I would definitely add a lot more detailing to the pilot and take more time and care with the water.

I think that as a 'proof of concept' project it worked.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.
