I was going to give the red and white checks a go on the Spartan Warrior helmet.
Can anyone recommend the best or the easiest way to paint them?
Also I've seen the same area done with triangles, would this be ok or will some anal historian come to my house and disown me?
I've also seen these checks done in the 70mm scale....jeez scary stuff.

Hi grant, my weapon of choice is a fine 'brush pen'. Available in art shops, and come in a large range of colours for a couple of quid each. They can be used for many other patterns as well, so are useful to have around.

Cheers

Thanks guys,
I thought about both these ways. I have the finepens but it comes out more pink than red. I might try to use the black one and go for the black and white checks.

You can draw it in with a super sharp pencil then fill it with your brush. Since it is a bust it should be pretty easy to do. I love this bust BTW.

I agree with Mike above, use a red pencil an fill in the nessecary squares or triangles with red paint. I did it this way on a 90mm figure and worked out fine.

Paint a based coat of white first and then draw the boxes with a red pencil and paint in the red squares? and then touch up the white boxes where needed? and then shade/highlight?

Just thinking through it as I have a checker pattern to put on a orc.

Use a pencil as guidelines then fill in carefully with paint using a small well pointed brush. This is the best way in my opinion. I have tried painting straight onto the figure without guidelines in the past and this never works out good.

Perhaps you could paint a white base, then use a math compass to draw your horizontal curves with a sharp pencil. Draw the vertical lines and fill in every other square with red.
