I just got most of the way through ordering a couple of figures from El Greco Miniatures, all the while seeing the total price increase, apparently with little regard to mathematics.
Did I miss the point somewhere?

Hi David

I did not purchase from them for this very reason. When I got to the checkout I was met with a top end price range, not what I thought I was my total price. It’s like they are saying they reserve the right to charge up to a price, so I came away. I wonder if it’s for 3D prints? Either way it’s a little odd.

Yes, I had the same experience.
And gave up.

Hello David and Dr Force,

We can assure you that we DO NOT increase the prices while you are shopping. If you had queries regarding the pricing, you should have sent us an email so that we could clarify matters.
The product prices are shown on the website. We have a dual pricing system - showing prices with and without VAT. Since you are both UK based, you need to look at price including VAT.

Because we have an international customer base, the checkout system works from the base price (that is, without VAT), and then the VAT is added once the destination address is completed. This is because the UK and EU countries have different VAT values.
When you go to the cart, you will see the prices shown with or without VAT.
The Subtotal shows the price without VAT, then the VAT, shipping and discounts are calculated once you complete the address details. So if posting to the UK, VAT will be + 20% (subtotal x 1.2), if posting to Sweden it will be +25% (subtotal x 1.25).
So just a brief glance below will show that the models themselves amount to £92.00 including VAT, then shipping is added thereafter.

We strive to keep the prices the same as those of the manufacturers despite fluctuating exchange rates and import charges.
It is slanderous to accuse us of not operating legally.

So we hope this clarifies matters. Any other questions, please send us an email.

Thank you,
Celine

I checked my basket twice, the price inclusive of vat and postage was still higher than the totals shown.

Maybe we should continue the conversation via email as ideally you would send us a screenshot of your basket.
From our end, we can see your "abandoned checkout" on the backend of our system.
Kit = £12.00
Shipping = £3.20
Subtotal = £15.20
VAT @20% = £3.04
Total = £18.24
Please advise if you are seeing a different total.
Thanks,
Celine

I was trying different combinations. The two figures comprising my original plan shown here illustrate my pointScreenshot_20240305_200604_Chrome.jpg
Postage took this up to over £37, although was quoted as ~£4.
Hence my original post.

Ok - as I have explained:
the subtotal is calculated EXCLUDING VAT. So the subtotal above shows the amount without VAT (£12.00 + £17.50 = £29.50).
WITH VAT, as you can clearly see in your own screenshot, the figures' total would be £14.40 + £21.00, so £35.40.
Postage is £3.20 + £0.64 VAT = £3.84
TOTAL for the order = £39.24
The maths is correct and the system is correct.

If for example you lived in the USA, then the kits would cost £29.50 + shipping to the USA because VAT is not charged to NON UK/EU customers. As explained above, most international shops operate this way because of different tax systems and calculations (check the websites of Scale75, BigChild, Pegaso, etc. where the total is calculated starting from the base price without VAT).

You keep calculating the totals excluding VAT.

Nothing mysterious here.
If you add the ex VAT prices, that gives the subtotal of 29,50.
Including VAT that makes 34,40.
With 4 shipping, that leads to ‘over gbp 37’.

Sorry to jump in, but I was intrigued by the thread title and by what was going on. To me El Greco’s story makes sense….nothing mysterious here…?

Come on David it's not rocket science although El Greco could probably make their listing simpler to understand.
The listing shows ex VAT and inc VAT just use the inclusive price to work out your total.

I think that's the problem: the subtotal was what misled me.

We cannot make it any simpler. The Cart clearly shows prices, with and without VAT. Then under the Subtotal box, it clearly says "VAT, shipping and discounts are calculated at the checkout".
We actually upgraded the e-commerce system to show dual pricing, with and without VAT.
