Being a lover of historex; trying my best to improve on their stiffness etc. and other weaknesses I see often the use of hooves/hocks for horses to improve this aspect. Does anybody now of commercially available components? Thanks

Not sure exactly what you are after Pilgrim. Certainly haven't seen any commercial horse hooves sold separately . . .

Usual trick with Historex is to use one of the bases to add thickness between the body halves to beef them up a bit. Horse shoes are available as spares from Historex as spares.
Alternatively if you are not set on using Historex mounts the Airfix ones are easy to get hold of and have a bit more heft to them and there are some lovely horses being produced by Altores which are specific breed types which might be easier than going all Dr Frankinstein ;)

If you like Historex do try to get hold of a copy of Bill Ottinger's book which has a wealth of inspiration

Many Thanks DaddyO coming back to me. Should have said not a total novice. Have Bill Ottingers book along with a few others; is well read.

If you can find them Dr Mike Thomas produced several excellent articles on this theme in Military Modelling in the late 1970s early 1980s.

Back in the day, the convention was to alter the horses by quartering them and then mixing them up a bit. Sometimes it was useful
to use a razor saw across the hock and swap the lower legs about ( as long as you kept the correct sides matched, and were careful
with the anatomy ). A surprising number of decent variations became possible.............you might give it a thought or two

Here's one of them. It even has a picture sequence on hooves / hocks:-

I always animate my Historex horses. First I mix 'n match horse body halves, even quartering them. Manes and forelocks are given more movement with a hot pin. I cut open the mouths and insert teeth, sometimes adding a tongue hanging out to the side if they are charging. If you can see the bottom of a hoof, cut out that v shape. I'll post some of my Historex dioramas soon. Hope this helps.
