Hi guys. I was wondering if the two Euro Modelismo books on how to paint in acrylics were any good? Im referring to:

Euro Modelismo Monograph #Emp-1 Painting in Acrylics, step by step guide

Euro Modelismo Monograph #Emp-2 Painting in Acrylics, step by step guide

when you look at the covers they are called "Painting Overhead Lighting" vol 1 and 2.

Are these good books for someone who wants to learn how to paint in acrylics? Ive never done so and im interested in learning how. I have Mike Blanks "Black and White" and found it to be a good book, are these of similar quality? I looked on Sentinel Miniatures website along with Accion Press website but neither had any real info on the books. Thanks guys!

David, Iwhilst I can't comment on the books you mention, make sure you get hold of Shepherd Paine's book, "Building & Painting Scale Figures" It's the figure painters bible for me, and I still refer to it from time to time now. Bill Horan's "Militiary Modelling Masterclass" is worth the money as well. Good luck in getting hold of these, I'm not sure if they're in print these days.

Thanks Anthony! I have both and your right, they are great books. Im trying to find something specific to painting in acrylics though. Im a very visual learner and i find that books with a lot of pictures and text explainations help me greatly and i was hoping these books would be like that.

I have both the overhead lighting ones. As well the Mike Blank Black and White.

I like the overhead lighting ones as I never could master Mike's enamel technique.

If I had to recommend, get the first one which has the basics. Vol 2 has some cool figgies painted up but not much real useful info. IMO...

Just for the record, I enjoy figure books and magazines.

Keith

Dave,
I have both and highly recommend them if you can find them. I learnt a tremendous amount from them and still look at them for ideas. As noted prior the second is just a follow up.
Enjoy them
Cheers
John

While these titles might be good inspiration to be able to leaf through you could save yourself the cost if you wanted - find two or three of the best articles on painting with Vallejo/Andrea paints online and then practice practice practice. Having a look in CMON would greatly help as there are dozens of threads with advice on painting with 'acrylics', plus if you want no-holds-barred critique that's one of the best places to get it.

Although these are usually called acrylics in the hobby they're actually vinyl paints BTW (originally cell vinyl paints, used in traditional hand-painted animation).

Though I'm sure there is SOME helpful information, I find these books do little more than TELL how a figure was painted rather than SHOW you how a figure was painted. It's great to know which colors to use on a German tunic, but how are they applied? Is the brush fully loaded with paint? Or did adding water to the mixture make it easier to shade? things like that.~Gary
