Face painting shading

My personal view is that there is no actual realistic face painting. Reason is simple: we are painting miniatures which per se are not realistic.

I couldn't disagree more.

I have seen plenty of figures on here, on other forums and on show tables that look incredibly realistic, lifelike (call it what you will).

However, that's not to say that a figure necessarily has to be "realistic" in order to be an amazing piece of work.

Pardon my ignorance... Can someone define "coal miners face" for me? I doesn't sound flattering at all.

The question of shading must come down to the intent of the artist. When figures are viewed, they are either seen in a venue such as a sports hall or conference centre or hotel or some other such location where the lighting is not always good, but always flat, or they are seen under the controlled lighting set up of a camera. Under these conditions, if you want to paint for bright sunlight, or misty moonlight or any number of natural lighting situations, however well you paint, you're going to have a problem:(. Add to that the difficulty of miniaturisation in a full scale environment.............. Then there's what colour do you use to highlight what eg. in some circumstances the highlight for black is yellow:(. It's not a matter of knowing all the answers, I think you are doing well if you can figure out some of the questions.o_O
Meanwhile study the great artists of the past and my typing fingers are now hurting!
Best wishes, Gary.

Now that I understand... add a few smashed bug guts and you got yourself a really sexy look.... but IMHO, not the best way to portray natural skintones.
As I said before, to each his own. If nothing else, I'm a Libertine at heart... do what makes you happy, as long as it doesn't infringe on me getting happy.

That way, everyone's happy :joyful:
