Yeah, tough to pick just a single movie. I have to think of movies I have on DVD and watch over and over.

"The Great Race", an outstanding slapstick comedy, well-written, well-cast, well-acted.
"Jaws", great suspense, and again, well-cast and well-acted.
"The Seven Samurai", even though I don't speak Japanese and rely on the subtitles. Also, its Western adaptation, "The Magnificent Seven". The theme and much of the story and characters translate well from feudal Japan to the Southwest circa 1870.
All of Clint Eastwood's spaghetti Westerns, as well as his "Pale Rider", "The Outlaw Josey Wales", and "Unforgiven"
"Dirty Harry". The sequels are enjoyable, too, but if I could only watch one, it'd be the original.
The original "Godzilla", in its original Japanese form, and the revised version with Raymond Burr's scenes added for the Western market. I was a big fan of Godzilla and other monster movies, when I was a kid. Every Saturday afternoon, watching them on Channel 48 and later Channel 17 out of Philly, when who knew from "kaiju"? We called 'em Japanese monster movies.
"Blade Runner" - the original version, with Deckard's narration. Great film noir in a science fiction setting.
"The Fifth Element"
"Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Temple of Doom", and "The Last Crusade". "Crystal Skull" sucked.
"Barry Lyndon"
"Star Wars"-the original, none of this "Episode 4" crap or "director's cut" nonsense. When it was a roll of the dice, and Lucas wasn't sure the movie would succeed. I saw it 10 times that summer, it made such an impression on me. The two original sequels are OK, and they do complete the story arc. But all of the rest of it is a colossal waste of time. Except for "The Mandalorian." I like the Western-in-space themes.

I can think of other movies I enjoy, but I don't have them in my library. That tells me that I don't like them enough to buy them.

Prost!

Basil Rathbone was good as Holmes, but I always enjoyed Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. I got to play Major Metcalf in a production of "The Mousetrap", and I based him on Bruce's Dr. Watson. I like that character so much.

Prost

Yeah, there's a lot to be said for the older movies from the 1940's/1950's.

I've just finished watching Hour of the Dragon E05 and am completely blow away. Will likely begin a new thread on this series once I get around to it.
Sure, it's a bit of a slow burn, but man, it's started to light up now.
Simply brilliant in terms of acting, character development and writing.
One thing's for certain -- it's ten times better than Amazon's Rings of Power dumpster fire.

Well, as you'll appreciate, both local and national TV is somewhat "limited" where I live -- although surprisingly enough, certain movies do get broadcast in the original English versions, and some of the excellent travel programs and historical epics don't need to be in translated to English anyway.

My DVD collection has been built up over the past 25-years or so, having been bought during visits to the UK, USA, Hong Kong, India, Philippines, etc.
Over the years, I've converted the vast majority of them to MP4 or MKV format so I can put them onto an ex-HDD and watch them anywhere.

Now why am I not surprised that "Barry Lyndon" is one of your favorites?...:)

(It's one of mine too).

Cheers

Yeah, I can't believe I forgot "The Godfather", great movie!
That reminds me that I left out "Casino" and "Goodfellas".
Also in the Mafia vein, but a comedy, is "My Blue Heaven". I don't have that one yet, though, but I do enjoy it. Pretty much anything Steve Martin has done.

Bill Irwin was in "My Blue Heaven", which gives me a segue to "Eight Men Out", about the Chicago Black Sox and the 1919 World Series Scandal. Irwin played White Sox second baseman Eddie Collins, who was not accused of throwing games for money and survived the scandal. John Sayles wrote the screenplay, directed the movie, and played writer Ring Lardner. That's a segue to another movie by Sayles that I enjoy, though it gets a little pretentious, and that's "Matewan", about the 1920 coal miners' strike in Matewan WV. Both of those Sayles movies are well-cast and well-acted.

As is "The Godfather". Though there could have been other casting decisions, Coppola got it right with his final choices.

Prost!
Brad

That's exactly why I'm posting these lists.
As I mentioned previously, it gives the reader a chance to review movies they haven't thought about for some time - and perhaps consider watching a few that they've never heard of.
It's all good.
