We have just returned from the Fen Model Show held over the weekend of 27-28 July in Ely. A very welcoming show with a superb number of competition entries - 1000+ models on display in three categories: Junior, Standard and Masters.

We had very little time to snap photos so we are sure there will be others who will contribute with some better images. But here is a short video of some of the Masters entries.
Well done to all the Medal and CORRRR winners.

Hi Celine

Can’t see a video ?

Hi Kev - not sure if you have to be logged in to Facebook then. The PF site asks to include a URL to the video so I cannot just upload it as it won't take it, unless I am missing something.

I went to the FEN show and managed to get a highly commended Pin! Didn't realise any forum members went.

Next time NAP will have to meetup in the flesh. :)

Hi fellow Planeteers,
I attended the Fen show last Saturday as I had heard quite a lot of good things about it.
Initially I thought I had turned up to the wrong show. I believe over 80% of the exhibits were fantasy and about half of them warhammer. The use of saturated colours and high contrast painting, although beautifully and artistically done, tended to wash out the military based exhibits.
I managed a Highly Commended, which I am happy with as that seemed to be the norm for most of the military based exhibits I saw, in the Standard class. Although Rob Lane deserved the Silver in the Masters for his pieces, 30th at Salamanca and surgeon, well done Rob.
It was good to chat to Rob and Ian of Elan13 and to Gordon and Tommi of RDG and a couple of other individuals I met there.
I would say I was rather disappointed over all and would be unlikely to return.

Here are the pictures I took of the show.( click on for lager images )

Hi Melanie

Many thanks for posting the pictures , some great models , very much fantasy oriented but well painted and presented

The military/ flats are as good and really good to see , Robs surgeon with the faces at the back is very clever indeed ( shown in Part 2 ) , peninsular trio looks great , like the smaller scale Napoleonic trumpeter’s

More importantly what did you enter for the HC award ?

Happy viewing and benchtime

Hi Nap,
My efforts are the fifth from last of the first set, centered around my Dutch Lancer.
Regards
Melanie

Well done Melanie, I thought your grouping looked excellent (and I spotted it among all the photos.....;)). I was thinking of attending on the Saturday but it was just too far (4.5 hours each way) for a mainly fantasy show. But it's nice to see what seemed to be a well organised figure-oriented show.

I was about to book the weekend away for next year but having now read that it is mainly fantasy, as a historical modeller l will stick with Darlington and éasingwold where the mix is more 50/50.

Keith
Hi Keith,I went on the Saturday day 1 and it wasn’t quite what I’d expected,a good day out,but 80% of the stuff on display was fantasy,I was expecting a much more rounded array of subjects, the models on display were really great, but like you I’m more of a historical / military enthusiast.

Hi Brian,

There has been no response from the organisers regading the comments on this thread, so clearly it is not a concern so perhaps a dedicated Fantasy show is not a bad idea considering the growth in fantasy entries in larger shows, expo's etc.

Hopefully White Rose and Easingwold won't tip too far away from Historical Miniatures, it seems a well balanced club at the moment and there is so much each Genre can learn from the other. It would be good to meet up with you at Easingwold next June Brian if you can make it!?

Take care in the meantime mate and I look forward to seeing more of your brilliant work on Planet.

Thanks Keith
I keep meaning to go to easingwold, perhaps next year I’ll do it.

It was lovely to see those above who attended the show, some great photos above and thank you for the kind comments about my pieces. Below are some musings of my own.

I can't speak for the organisers of the Fen show but I do know they run an event that welcomes all genres of model making. There were tanks, aircraft, historical, sci-fi, Gundam and fantasy models on display in the competition classes. I agree with the comments from those above that attended the show that the majority of the displays were fantasy/sci-fi but that was because more fantasy/sci-fi painters brought their models to display than historical modellers did, not that historical painters weren't welcome.

The trade was certainly more biased to historical figure modelling with: RDG. SK Models, El Greco, Elan13 Miniatures (who also carried Oakwood bases) Hawk Miniatures, Name It and Sphere in attendance. There was also a brush seller and figure base seller and several smaller companies selling some excellent fantasy/sci-fi figures and busts.

The set up for the display area for the competitions was excellent, with purpose built units and lighting. There were also several free demonstrations in a dedicated room with video and big screen on Sunday. The competition with its Junior, Standard and Master classes, was the highest quality, for figures, I have seen in the UK for many years and was judged to an SMC standard, by judges who have judged at SMC and Euromilitaire.

The venue is next to the river with pubs and bars nearby and a short walk from historic Ely town centre.

On both days the atmosphere in the hall was friendly with discussions about all sorts of model making and painting going on. As a trader who goes to many model shows in a year, I saw more new faces to shows here that I do elsewhere and the average age of attendees was lower too, I believe the organisers should be complemented on getting new people to shows and for attracting people from Europe too.

Personally, I feel I can learn much from figure model makers of all genres, but I appreciate this is not for everyone. The Fen show will only have a higher percentage of historical models on display if historical model makers bring their work along and enter it: they would definitely be welcome.

On a final note when I trade at the excellent Figure World North Show in Easingwold, I don't think of it as a military figure show but as a show that welcomes all genres, even though there is a significant majority of military subjects in the competition.
