I would like to see this. The competition element does not appeal to me so much as the increased banter, good natured ribbing and technical discussions would.

Maybe categories like humor, inventiveness, story ,emotion. Change up the months theme. This way the technically superior painters won't run away with it evey month, leading to boredom.

On the subject of prizes, I would think it would be great publicity for the vendor, but agree, it need not fall on one or two shoulders, that would not be fair.

Roger: You replying made me realise that I'd forgotten the 'flats' guys! With that in mind I'd probably feel inclined to include flats in with busts, should you or anyone else want to enter something.

- Steve

I'm quite happy to enter a flat(s) alongside the other figures in a single "Model of the Month" category.
I think waiting to see the entries and voting in the monthly for fun comp. would be something to look forward to.

Hi Steve ,

I am up for this both for members and for the manufacturers ...

Might I suggest we have one for Figures, Flats, and busts ...a poll coukd be used .

What about the sculptors on here as well ?

Good idea to have a yearly winner as well chosen from the monthly winners

To tell the truth I would actually prefer the flats to be entered with everyone else because lets face it there's only me and a couple of others who post their flat work here.
I aren't bothered if I'm competing against some of the best figure painters in the world, to me it's a matter of supporting the forum and taking part in something that is supposed to interesting and fun.

We need to make this as inclusive to as many people of differing abilities as possible and for it not to appear as if it's just for the elite.

Good point there Roger its all about supporting the forum and taking part ...keeping it simple for the choice of best completed model whatever it is

Would still like to see the sculptors having something ?

As Del says all pieces should be completely finished and not been shown before

Ian, could you could put up a prize in the "Flat entered from Bedale, North Yorkshire" category? I'll let you know which one I'd like nearer the time, thank you. :D

Kev - As Roger says, I don't think that there are enough dedicated flats painters on pF to make a separate flats category viable. I'd also prefer to keep it simple, just for painters. If I start including sculptors as well, it all starts getting too unwieldy and complex. Sorry.

Stu and Ian - Thanks for your offers of support. Much appreciated.

Indeed keep it very simple. I also think it is important to avoid framing this as a competition along the usual lines. The only criterion to judge or nominate a model as model of the month is if there is anything that makes it stand out. That can be the painting, but also the composition, groundwork, colour scheme, cleverness, creativity, narrative, etc. This should encourage everyone, at all levels to participate. As an example, a figure not well painted, but very cleverly combined with groundwork or with a nice narrative will also 'win'.

Simple majority voting is simple, but what can happen is that voting is done along the usual tastes, and the thing evolves into the usual competition, and the usual suspects thing, discouraging many to participate. To try and keep things inclusive, perhaps the monthly final call is made by the organizer, based on number of votes of course, but not only: Also on additional comments received and simply on the subjective view of the organizer. That way the usual suspects thing can be managed somewhat.

I would not recommend a requirement to only allow unpublished (completed) pieces. I feel this will negatively impact the normal posting. I'd suggest to simply let anyone propose entries at any time, even if already posted in vBench or Completed figures. The only requirement can be that it is fairly recent work.

Just some ideas, hopefully helpful.

Agreed just a suggestion but best as you say keep it simple

Adrian raises a good point about possible negativity to other normal posting otherwise we might have folk not posting on V Bench , etc

I suggest just 1 entry per member per month ..we all have a lot completed to choose from to get it going .

Nice to see manufacturers supporting as well

Good suggestion this Steve from you and Carl

Reading Adrian Post he raises some very good points. How about taking the entry for ' Model of the Month' from those figures that have been posted on completed works , thus negating the possible decline in post's.

As a shall we say less talented modeller I would possibly not enter one of mine into a competition but if it was included has a catchall having posted on completed works then why not,

Mick

GO for it.
But the painting should not be judged. If Cartacci paint it, or I paint it will make alot of difference.
We can take the format as Gordy did, that worked before, so it can work now.
Everybody choose 5 figures or bust's. (if there are two categories we should choose 5 of each).
Then voting and there will be 3 left.
Then make the final choice.

Marc

Some valid points raised that merit thought - thanks guys. Also nice to see that the response so far has been largely positive.
