A bit of a loaded question but I'm returning to figure modelling after a long time . In my day some of the top manufacturers were Poste Militair and Grieves and Saunders,
Can anyone give me their opinions as to whom the very top manufactures are now in quality and reputation ? The period I'm interested in is anything up to 1900 and mainly 75mm upwards.
Im just looking for experienced suggestions and opinions. Thanks.

Alpine Miniatures and FeR Miniatures represent absolute top quality to me, but there are many others with which I have less or no experience. Alpine only has few figures before 1900 however (one 1:16 American Civil War, perhaps the only one).
Young Miniatures (for busts) or Life Miniatures as well.

Roger Saunder figures still stand the test of time by the way if you ask me.

You’ve come back to the hobby in a golden age…so much choice at almost perfect quality levels!

Cheers
Adrian

Hi Paul,
Up to 1900 covers one hell of a period. Do you model an eclectic mix or specific periods and regiments?
It might be easier to point you towards specific manaufacturers, failing that it might be worth looking through
the manufacturers list on here.
cheers
Richie

Thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions. The big thing that strikes me is the great cost of plastic /resin figures . I know all about the sculpting, casting , production and marketing as I used to be in a similar business.
i used to like the heavy solid feel of white metal but I have to admit I do not like the new resin ones. When people ask me about my collection they always say....what are they ? I reply ...metal , related to pewter. Now I'll have to say plastic /resin.
Before anyone blows their tops I emphasis this is MY opinion returning to figure modelling
and not a criticism. The resin figures are superb and so are the 3 D printed ones. I love to see them and the recommendations here are excellent. I wish I could say once they're painted what difference does it make ? Maybe I'll come round but at the moment I think I'll stick to white metal figures. Thanks again to everyone's input.

Pegaso Models is an excellent choice for quality white metal figures and they have a lot of 75mm and up to 90mm figures for the period you prefer. You can pick them up on E-Bay or from vendors Like El Greco Miniature Ltd in the U.K.

I get it. It's too bad shipping is so expensive or I'd give you the metal figures I have. I have some old dandies that I'll never paint buried in bins stored in the basement.

Tell me what you have Steve !!

yes, I'm looking on e bay ! I'm getting some good buys and amazed to see all the old stuff still in circulation . The Grieves 100mm are still incredible in quality and weight. I got Sailor Milan from a woman saying it was a toy soldier in pieces for £20 ! I left figure modelling just as the resin stuff started to take over. Verlinden seemed to be the start of it. I guess I'm a die hard for white metal.

I have to agree with you regarding the .metal preference although I do paint resin also.

I can't take to 3d prints but I suppose I will gradually get to accept them like I did resin.

That said I have enough in my stash to see me out without any new purchases.
