Ken: Thank you, but no it won't. It was just done for the heck of it and as a change of pace from the other stuff I was working on.

Kenneth: It did turn out pretty smooth, but remember this is larger scale so that's a lot easier to smooth out than the small stuff. If it were, say, 90mm I don't know if I could have gotten the finish as clean! The steel wool probably made the biggest difference. Oh, and Alan told me to scrub it with a toothbrush and toothpaste to remove minor blemishes, so I think that helped as well.

Gray: What's stopping you? ;)

Francesca ,again fantastic stuff.I read you use water to smoothen MS down and that it tends to bead up.That is very true.In fact that's why I use alcohol. Much much better. You should try it.

The alcohol beaded up too! Were you using regular Isopropyl? I know it comes in 70% and 91%... is one better than the other?

Anyway, someone told me that handcream is a good smoothing agent. Haven't tried that yet though... because I tend to heat the figures in a crockpot to dry the putty, I thought that might cause a problem the way vaseline does.

although I'm a little nervous about the yellow of the slicker...

Well, first let me congratulate you on that fisherman - well done, although I'm not a sculptor myself I see you've done the folds etc. in the clothing real well.

As for painting the yellow, I'm always nervous about that colour too ;) . Do you paint in oils? Then I'd suggest something like Cadmium yellow with Titanium white added for opacity, over fe. a base coat of acrylic Vallejo 953 matt yellow (3 - 4 thin coats should make up a nice base coat). Shade with burnt umber, highlight with base + more titanium white.

Hope this helps,

Johan

Francesca,

wonderful work !

I love those folds and the clothing layers, the big buttons too ;)

Can only comment now since my XP Pro went belly up at monday :( but is back to "workable" again thanks to a mate.

I use nearly pure Isopropyl alcohol. It does bead up slightly but surely not as much as water. I never tried hand cream. Probably waiting for someone to assure me it works since I too heat the figures up in the crockpot

Might want to try a "Test Blob" of your medium in the crock pot to see what it does with the hand lotion on it.....while you are at home to monitor it....IMHO

No no, I liked your entire Bela Lugosi sculpt! It's just that I have a very hard time with ears so when I see how well other people do them I am always impressed . :)

I'll give the alcohol another try. And I'll experiment with using the handcream and crockpot. I'll let you know the results.
