Great Taff,
They become eerily close to home once in colour.
Black and white subconsciously makes you think these were years ago, which they were.
Then in colour you look at them like any normal present day photograph and it really connects you with the individual I think, it doesn't seem that long ago then.

Great to see

Thanks for these Chris, Gra is right, there is something eerie about them, colourising is so much better than it used to be!
Best wishes, Gary.

Forgive me for saying but I think they look more true to the period in monochrome ,having said that they are still fantastic in colour as well .

Chris, if you go on you tube, there are an awful lot of civl war music sites. the best one is called The Blue and the Grey-songs of the civi war.It was a BBC radio programme from 1959.
Best wishes, Gary.

He's the one lying down with the dog.
Gary & Chris - thanks for pointing that out.

I think the old b&w images have a lot of atmosphere and im not a real fan of 'recolouring' usually but these really do help to humanise the men shown. I sometimes wish that photography had been discovered just 50 years sooner and we would have got Napoleonic images like this - if only!
Cheers
Mat

There is a tangible benefit to these photo's as well. Those of us who insist upon bright blues for Federal uniforms can see what the reality is. While there is a range of hues that are correct for these colors this shows that they were largely highly muted. Wear and weather only increased this.

Many images of this sort can be found on the Facebook group COLORIZING HISTORY, which may well be the source of these. They have a number of terrific Crimean War images that have been colorized as well.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the responses and feed back I agree the black and white has a wonderful effect on historic military history.
It's just the colours are spooky change the uniforms cut the hair and and it could have been 10 years ago not over a hundred .
I agree Steve with observation of the the colours of the uniforms and I have always felt that some painters will paint what they think the blue from research , when in fact a lot of the uniforms were not of good quality foe the in listed man , officers being a different ball game
I agree muted dye washed out faded just the sun and rain is bad enough
Cheers Chris

i think someone did a commercial sculpt of the 3 confederate POW's.

zane

It's definately been done in miniature before - certainly done as a flat before today.

It's a very famous photo of Confederate POWs. If I recall correctly it was taken by the famous civil war photographer Matthew Brady. No doubt somebody will corect me......
